Army service number query

Does anyone know what the prefix WR/ signifies before an army service number?

Logical but not correct, I am afraid. The WR prefix was used by the Royal Engineers for men who served in their Inland Waterways and Railways departments.
 
Thanks for that Chris, I feel I should have known that, but it was before my time so was ignorant about the pre fixing of army serial numbers. Paul
 
Thank you Chris, that would seem to be right, my ancestor was serving in a light railway company...
