Does anyone know what the prefix WR/ signifies before an army service number?

Logical but not correct, I am afraid. The WR prefix was used by the Royal Engineers for men who served in their Inland Waterways and Railways departments.
 
Thanks for that Chris, I feel I should have known that, but it was before my time so was ignorant about the pre fixing of army serial numbers. Paul
