Anyone fancy sharpening their search skills?

I'm now almost completely sure that Edwin Arthur Smith the footballer is not your Edwin Smith. The main site that has information about him has mixed up two different Edwin Arthur Smiths (neither yours) and used info from both.

Taking Ernest's assertion that his mother and 5 of his brothers were dead by 1916 at face value then, as we know that Walter was still alive (d1917) and probably Charles (d1917) and assuming he wasn't including William (died young ?) as one of the 5 it would seem to imply he was referring to Frederick, Harry/James, Thomas, Edwin/Edward and Arthur - are dead.

Frederick is dead. Nothing certain for the others and the big problem is that Harry's wife is still listing herself as married after 1916 even though Harry doesn't seem to be with her.

In post 13 Rich mentions Walter has a son called Hart.
That ties in with this info

The marriage cert is

Address of Hospital Street seems to fit but Father's occupation is "labourer".
Discharged as unfit to serve 1915

It's that mmn listed for their children (other than Charles) and on one of the censuses she is with her parents in Shropshire with 2 of their children.

I assume you know it's possible that Charles (the father) wasn't a Smith at all.

There is no birth reg. for him or marriage for his parents that I can see and Thomas appears to still be single in 1851. None of which are conclusive but create a little doubt.
ah, i do have charles smith senior's birth and marriage certificates and from census inference know that charles was born, the middle names are interesting because thomas is charles seniors fathers name.... its the richard im struggling with, maybe from his mothers side?
