I found this info on my Gt Grandfather off the CWGC site....

Died 5/2/1917 serjeant wiltshire reg, 3rd batallion training reserve transfer to (8/8269) 35th batallion Service Number 14586 he was bought home from France but died of his injuries. He is on the Witton Cemetary Memorial and buried there... i am trying to find his service records/if he received any medals, but can't find anything at all.....can someone tell me was the 35th Batallion part of the Wiltshire regiment? All the photo's we have of him are on a Horse so it looks like he could have been Cavellry, or would it have been a totally different regiment as i have no idea on these things, sorry to sound so stupid, many thanks Claire

Hi Claire: There is a web site about the Wiltshire Regiment and has a list of names and a lot of links that might help you out. There is a William Martin listed under the Militia listings but he was born in Croydon: Have a look at:
https://www.thewardrobe.org.uk/index.php

Good luck with this Claire.

Clair,

I am now going to cause a lot of confusion. I see the info you have on William Martin is taken from the CWGC site. However, I have a CD Rom called 'Soldiers Died in the Great War'. On that, the info concerning William Martin is:-

Born, Aberdeen.
Enlisted, Birmingham.
Died, Home 5/2/17.
9th Bn Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry No. TR/8/8269

Formerly served in Oxford & Bucks L.I. No.9558

I have been on the Ancestry site and the National Archives trying all permutations of name and number, but, I have been unable to locate any information, i.e., Medal Index Card, Service Papers.

Regards

Terry

Thanks for that Jennyanne, i will have a good look threw that...

Terry you are a genius, i think you are right, this is why i wanted to double check the info, he was infact born in Aberdeen (or around there) going on what little info my Nan knew about, i think the info you have found is correct as the date of death matches and he was resident in birmingham at his time of death... i spoke to one of his childrens remaining children and he said it fitted as he remembers as a child going to Witton wth his mother to a grave but he couldn't remember who it was, he did say his mom had mentioned Devices tho which is in Whiltshire, but as you can see he passed leaving young children and i only have word of mouth, but i think that could be him, he could have been transferred to that one... i will now see if i can get his actual War Records from the MOD, i am sure his wife's name would be on the papers somewhere to deffinately confirm it... thank you so much for your help :)

Sorry to be a pain again but can i have another look up please.... John Poole, Pt Coldstream Guards, died 9.10.1919 according to the offical army notification, be very grateful if someone can find his service records, have searched with no luck, thank you Claire

Two of that name in the Coldstream Guards, neither had death notification on. Do you know his number?? Check these 2 cards

Thanks Lloyd, can you find any service records for those that would confirm which one he is? The scroll is the kings scroll and lists only his rank and name, he lived Kings Norton, many thanks Claire
