Any Amateur Sleuths out there?

tayrich

knowlegable brummie
Hi all,
I recently joined Ancestry.UK, and I'm still a bit of a novice. I'm wondering if any more knowledgeable people here could give me a bit of help.
My great grandfather Percival Kennedy was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1864.
In 1888 he married Charlotte Talbot, (it was her second marriage) with whom he had 2 children, Charlotte (my grandmother) and Jane.
However by 1895, I have found records of her having more children with the surname Tighe.
I can find no record of Percival Kennedy dying, or of them divorcing, or of her re- marrying.
A bit of a mystery, but as I said I am a bit of a novice, so any help would be appreciated.
(If you're wondering what the Brummie connection is, Charlotte lived here for many years and is buried in Witton cemetery)

Was the marriage in Birmingham or elsewhere in the UK?
I ask because Irish records are notoriously scarce and hard to track.
What makes you think the Tighe children are hers?

Sorry - just trying to get a handle on what you have seen. I just wondered if you found the children on a UK census with her or on GRO (as that doesn't include Irish records)
Will have a look in a bit.

I am struggling to get anywhere.
I am assuming the Charlotte who is buried at Witton is the daughter of Perceval and Charlotte? Just checking I have the correct people.

I am confused - there is tree on Ancestry (not yours I hasten to add) with children Margaret and Grace Tighe. These are linked to 1901 and 1911 census but both are transcribed to a Caroline Tighe not a Charlotte. I have just checked the original census record and it is definitely a Caroline.
I am left wondering what is going on.
Sorry - this isn't helping much.

No problem, I am just as confused.
Also my great grandfather Percival Kennedy seems to have disappeared without trace, no record of him of his death or on census.

All the children (not all info correct) listed with Patrick and 'Caroline' Tighe on 1901 census can be matched to baptisms with mother listed as Charlotte (Talbot for all except Kennedy for Kathleen).

Nicholas Ferguson, Charlotte & Jane Kennedy and Margaret & Kathleen Tighe.

There doesn't appear to be any untruths on the marriages for the elder children, father's are listed correctly and Charlotte is a witness on Nicholas' as Charlotte Tighe.

Three options would seem to be that Percival died and Charlotte re-married where the records are not as readily available, Scotland for example - Percival abandoned the family and Charlotte moved to Dublin and 'married' Patrick with no one there knowing any better - Charlotte took the children and left Percival then moved to Dublin etc.

I'd doubt the last one because there should still be some subsequent record of Percival but it's all speculation.

I have sent you a PM with a link to Charlotte Talbot in a family tree on Ancestry.
I usually take these trees with a pinch of salt as many seem to contain errors but this one has some interesting comments and links to evidence so I am inclined to accept it. The owner seems to be descended from John Ferguson (one of Charlotte's children from her first marriage). There are some birth/baptism certs which link the Tighe children to Charlotte rather than the Caroline of the census records.
See what you think.

Unfortunately there is no more info on Perceval. Other than the lack of a marriage to Patrick Tighe might confirm Perceval is still around.
