Looking for Family links Ansell 's of Aston/Aston Manor with Garbett/Thew(Thuino - Italian)Circa 1878 and beyond
 
not really sure what youre after but there is a marriage of george john ansell possibly to theresa thew 1878 oct-dec 6d 547
 
Thankyou Shera I'm trying to explore prior to that marriage including the Italian link suggested by Winifred Ansell as X signature derived from Italian Thuino(Thew/Thu)

Sorry if I am being a pain Shera, but I am aware of a large Italian migration of artisans to London in the Holborn area in the mid-1800's but have seen no reference by anyone to such on the Birmingham Forum(maybe its there somewhere) Did the same happen in Birmingham then There seems perhaps a link between George John Ansell father James as Church Bellhanger and Theresa Isabel Thew(Thuino) father George as a Bricklayer - evenso I would expected the Thuino famiily to have been RC yet would think that the marriage at
St Margarets Church in the parish of 'Hard luck???' Warwick(is Washwood Heath Road any help)might have been CofE as the Ansell Family has developed - any clues of how this might have worked and where/how/when the Thew/Thu(Thuino)family might have arrived in Birmingham from Italy

I also found a Susannah Garbett who may have married a George Toone (Could be a Phonic spelling ?) June 1839

I have an Italian family dating back to the 1841 census living in B'ham, there were quite a few I believe Tarone/Taroni /Tyrone/i
 
Birmingham History Forum, Pomgolian, It is nice to know that there is someone out there ready to hold my hand across the stepping stones Susannah Garbett does seem could be a 60% match probably I'll, test it and see what comes up It is somewaht a relief to learn of your 'Italian' connection in the mid-1800's as i thought it could not possibly be just a London event, albeit the Italian area around Holborn even now is strong with the Italian Church nearby, in Clerkenwell Road EC What I was hoping for was there some such enclave, in Birmingham with some sort of described history of its foundation so that I might get a 'handle' on what sort of area the Thew /Thuino family might have derived from - as I haven't found the name on Internet 'Italian names' yet Thanking you for your interest shown and Best wishes briansell

I thought at first these entries from Birmingham directories would be of interest. Turns out they are not Italian , (at least back to 1833).

1888-1892 Thew Elizabeth (Mrs.), shopkeeper, Holborn hill, Nechells
Not listed in 1887 or 1895.

The 1891 census lists her as a widow (66) shopkeeper , with a son (31) edge tool maker, and she was born in Birmingham
In 1881 she is still a widow, but living in 1 Lorne terrace, Argyle St
In 1871 she is with her husband George (38) at 12 water st, but both are born in birmingham

Do you think some possibly changed to “Tew”, of which there are some.

Hi there,In 1861 New Bartholomew Street held a large amount of Italians. The musical Solero family lodged there.
In 1851 there were quite a few Italian families in the Digbeth/Deritend area,mainly Looking Glass makers and Plaster Figurine makers.

I think that yourself,Shera and Pomgalian have picked up on the right links My information on Thew/Thu/Thurino derivation came direct as written from Winifred Ansell(sister of George james 2 and grandaughter then of George John/Theresa Isabel Thew)Born around 1905 in Birmingham assumed and having lived to ripe old age of 98years - maybe a bit iffy then I have marriage cert for George James 1/Emma Jane Garbett(1900/426)with addresses given as 27 Argyle Street/86 Cuckoo Road at StClementsChurch - NECHELLS and witnesses George Garbett(F)Albert Garbett/Florence Ansell/Gertrude Ansell/William P Maltby Coupled with that I also have marriage cert for George John Ansell/Theresa Isabel Thew(1898/112 or Shera ref 6d 547)with both addresses Washwood heath Road(Oooo er!)at StMargaretsChurch and witnesses James Ansell(F)/George Thew(F)-deceased/Eliza sarah Ansell/George Ashford Thus this ties in with your Elizabeth Thew having been widowed between 1871/1881 The son said at home with Elizabeth Thew presumed born abt 1860 is then perhaps a sibling of Teresa isabel Thew also presumed born abt 1860(married at 18 in 1878) I have George James Ansell 2 born at 1 Victoria Avenue Lichfield Road in 1900 and George James Ansell 1 born at Court 26 Lichfield Road in 1879(yet Argyle Street when married in 1900???) That leaves at this time then trying to link dates for Susannah Garbett presumed Born abt 1820(married in 1839)as a relative of the earliest Garbett family member I have being George Garbett the father of Emma Jane Garbett born abt 1882(married at 18 in 1900) I confess that I feel that i have just started reading a biography and the author just started outlining the characters floating around this new suburb of Aston Manor such that I won't be able to put it down until I know 'who dunnit' Many thanks for your time spent by All on my behalf which is very much appreciated (perhaps the Italian Turino does Angiicise to Tew and Thew/Thu - its worth a 'punt' I suppose) briansell

George Aubrey Chesterman Ansell working in the watchmaking industry in Birmingham about 1937(and later Hatton Garden in London)and
do recall watching a most interesting tv programme on it a while back - but will have to leave that till later on Now to find out where
New Bartholomew Street and Digbeth/Deritend are(have heard of them b4) Ta muchly briansell
 
The last of the italian quarter is beeing demolished at this very moment it is located barely 200 meters from Millenioum point which is in Curzon St. Dek

I think you are correct about Theresa Isobel being a daughter of Elizabeth. The 1871 census (while George was alive) lists household as George and Elizabeth and then:

Anne E.Thew (5)
Florence A Thew (3)
Joseph R. Thew (1)

instead from Smithfield london to visit the old brick Cold Store near Birmingham main Line Station already in state of collapse with frost-heave even then,

Mike Thanks for that Business woman Elizabeth must have been a late starter then if born abt 1825 and to have bridged that generation gap which worried me somewhat prior thereto Theresa Isobel was listed as 18 years in 1878 when married, so that ties in well, and probably she looked after little old Joseph whilst mum was serving the split peas(or whatever)to the customers A son at home aged 31 years in 1891 slips a few(4)years though if that was George R briansell
