another pub closure

yet another lovely pub to close...fingers crossed for its future

Hopefully the owners will do as they have said and open it again as a pub. "Star Pubs & Bars Limited, want to now run it themselves". Such a nice old pub, both inside and out (as shown below). Filming of the first series of Call of Duty was done there, there is some super art nouveau tiling present and it has a Grade II listing, I understand.

If people do not use their 'local' then surely they have no option but to close ?? Eric
True, but in the age of the PubCo a tenant is often tied to a brewery who also owns the building as part of a property portfolio. Food is often more important than beer sales. I think it is difficult for tenants to make a living wage. I can't say if this particular decision will benefit The Queen's Head, let's hope so.

I guess I should add that some of the internationals do an excellent job. Fullers has been owned by Asahi Group Holdings since 2019 which has a large market share in several European countries, besides the UK. They have a mix of tenancies and managers who work directly for Fullers. Pubs in Birmingham and Stratford.

My wife and I had some wonderful Saturday evenings there in the early 1980's. There was a doberman dog who lived on the premises and a black cat called Thomas. We had many laughs listening to a regular group of St John's ambulance trainees' cracking ever increasing outrageous jokes, after downing a few 'Snake Bites'. I also remember an elderly gentleman who came in with his Jack Russel dog. The dog's party piece was his ability to catch beer mats, skimmed though the air by numerous patrons. Very happy days.

This is typical of the brewing industry and used to happen a lot in the 70’s where a landlord with a lease would take all of the risks and build up the business, only for the brewery to then refuse to renew the leas and put a manager in and rake off the newly found profits.

Its looking like they have done this to Mr Choraria, who took it on with a short lease. It looks like he was doing a super job.

Just closed for two months then. New licensee, looks like the brewery's manager. Could be good, I can see that red was bit glaring, but heritage grey looks dour in Winter. Better than we had feared.
