Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

hi paul we have a thread for upper highgate school for girls...it mentions pupils and teachers and heads name ..have a read of it from post 1 and if you like make a post asking if anyone remembers your mom being there as most posts seem to be from the time she would have been at school..its a long shot but worth a go i think...click on link below to take you to the thread

Thank you very much again, Lyn. Dad also said she used to get the train from Snow Hill station to Quinton. That seems to suggest the school must have been near a railway station. Poor thing had a lot of travelling around to and from school!

just to confirm that we know for certain from the erolls your mom was living at moseley road in 1958/59 and 1960

That is such a major finding, thanks so much Lyn. So they lived there for what was probably Mum's senior school years. It's a pity the place is now demolished! And no comment on the present architecture!
We don't know where they were 1955 to 1958
Thank you Janice, I'm wondering is that because it may take a few years to get on the eroll?

hi paul as you said your mom came to birmingham from ireland when she was 12 years old so round about 1955..we have the family living at moseley road in 58/59 and 60 so far i cant find them in birmingham before 1958 so its possible that they lived outside of birmingham first..i have looked again at the erolls and i cant find robert and ellen in birmingham in 1955..at a guess i would suggest that the moseley road house was their first house in birmingham...just a guess though

Coming from Ireland I am not sure what needed to happen. Or it might be they lived outside the boundary for a while. I will continue to look..

Hi Lyn, you're so good to go to all that trouble but please don't go out of your way. You've already sent so much great information. AFAIK they did live in Birmingham but they kept moving around. For example, they lived above a doctor's surgery in Moseley area at one point. But they may well have moved to bordering regions for a while, too. Thank you for all you've done already and there's no need to go to any more trouble. I'm very indebted already and so grateful for the great information! Thanks a million!

Hi Janice, likewise, please don't go to any undue trouble. I'm really grateful already for your kind efforts and great research! I do know they left Dublin before her brother Joe finished school, as the school in Dublin was very sorry to lose him and asked that he remain. As he was 17 at the end of 1958 (school leaving age in Dublin), that all suggests he/they would have left Dublin earlier. Mum is quite vague on schools and addresses but I'm guessing all the moving was a bit of a blur to her, especially when she was so young. But anyway, please don't trouble yourself unduly, and thank you again.

We like a challenge on this site so no trouble. :D

If they moved around to start with it may well be that they didn't register to vote until they had a more fixed address.

i could be wrong but i seem to have read that families coming from ireland could have lived in liverpool as a starting point as it was a port they arrived at...

Hi Lyn,
I believe that was especially the case during the Great Famine of the 1800s. At that time, many either emigrated to the US or to Liverpool. But I know whenever we travelled to and fro we would always go via Holyhead in Wales.
