Alternative methods of searching ?

Hi,

I am fairly new to genealogy however have relied very much on the information thats one both Ancestry and Findmypast which has been good however I am sure there are other methods but really don't know what.

Most of my mothers side are from Birmingham but I really do know very little about them.

Are there places that I can search for obituaries, adoption records or work details?

Just trying to broaden my search tricks.

Thanks

Scott

Hi Scott.

I don't know about obituaries, adoption records or work details, but I have found the following sites useful:

https://familysearch.org/search (free - particularly useful for births as it often gives parents' names)

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/

https://warwickshireinfo.webspace.virginmedia.com/index.htm

https://www.midlandshistoricaldata.org/ for electoral rolls and other info (not free though!)

Also in Ancestry if you have not found it already, search for 'National Probate Calendar'

and also useful can be www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk - not free but you may be able to access it via your library web site.

Hope this helps. Good searching! John

Adoption records are often confidential and can only be accessed via a lengthy process. Records may be kept in the Local Authority but in the past were often casual placements in which case no records exist. If you Google "adoption records" it gives some ideas.
Birmingham library may old some records especially for local newspapers.
Work records often don't exist in the public domain unless it was a national company eg Post Office or railways.

If you gave us a name and date people might be able to help.
