All Saints Asylum, Lodge Road – 1927

I’m back researching my family tree again!

My great-granddad died in 1927, aged just 51, from General Paralysis of the Insane, which I’ve since discovered was a late complication of syphilis.

After looking back over his death certificate, I realised that the address given, 283 Lodge Road, was actually associated with All Saints Asylum in Winson Green. I hadn’t realised this before!

I’ve just emailed Birmingham Archives to ask whether any of his admission records or medical notes still exist and whether I’d be able to access them, particularly as it’s almost 100 years since his death.

I’ve done a bit of research into the hospital and found some photographs, but very few of the inside, apart from some taken much later, around the 1990s.

I also came across a fascinating photograph of the male nursing staff at Winson Green, dated 1925, which apparently went up for auction in 2024. It was quite something to think that some of those men may have cared for my great-granddad.

I just wondered whether anybody has any old photographs of All Saints, particularly the inside or the wards, or knows anything more about what the hospital was like back in the 1920s?

Also, has anybody successfully accessed patient records from that period? I’m really hoping to find out when he was admitted and how long he spent there.

Would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about the hospital or has researched relatives who were patients there.

hi suzzanne the map below shows no 283 to be the lodge which as you say is attached to the hospital so maybe they used that number on death certs..if you move the map to the right you can see how large the hospital was and if you move the blue dot to the left the map fades out to show you what is there now..if you are not on ancestry and you can provide us with your gt grandads name maybe we can find his records on ancestry for you

Thanks for the map :) that’s interesting! It’s definitely that address so that would confirm he died there.

I thought when I checked ancestry before the records went up to 1921 but I must be wrong.

Just a FYI I do have Maria yommi notes from there that someone got for me before.

I’ll attach the death certificate.
Name is Guiseppe iommi, but as you can see from death certificate, surname looks like yommi.
Also the first name was sometimes “Joseph” .
Yea if anyone can find any notes that would be amazing.
