These old buses remind me of the 5.18 pm dash out side GEC Witton works a number of harpers buses used to transport workers from the Staffordshire AreaA Harpers bus on the Aldridge Road ... but this is the Aldridge Road in Streetly and is about a mile east of the Aldridge Road, Birmingham. The building on the left behind the bus is what was commonly known as a 'Tin Tabernacle' and is still there today but is currently occupied by a small printing company.

Hello. I used to live in Crowsnest Dairy in Aldridge Rd Streetly in the 1950's. It was right opposite the Printing works. (it may have still been the tin tabernacle at that time. I lived there until I was 7 years old) We also lived in Foley Rd West. I used to catch the Harpers bus to school in Bloxwich in the early 60's Sorry if I have answered in the wrong placeA Harpers bus on the Aldridge Road ... but this is the Aldridge Road in Streetly and is about a mile east of the Aldridge Road, Birmingham. I also lived close by, in Maxholm Road from around 1953 to 1970's , used the Harpers buses a lot, got a job in the city centre 1964 and used this bus to get me to Kingstanding. Growing up in Streetly, we used to sing at the tops of our voices as the conductor came round "You'll never get to heaven on a Harper's bus, cuz a Harper's bus, it never guz!", Happy days.Nice pic, OM. I live very nearby and know the old 'tin tabernacle' very well. The land at the extreme left of the photo is now flattened out and is farm land (oil-seed rape, great for my hay-fever, I don't think). To the right of the photo, and not visible, would have been the old BIP factory. That bus looks like it's on its last legs....

My Nanny & Grandad lived in one of the bungalows having moved down from Raglan Road Cape Hill I think it was late 1920 early 30s, no.37, I can remember the top deck of a tram in next doors garden that being used as a sun house early 1950, Mom her Sister & brother lived there prior to marrying they were the Parry’s originally Grandad came from Birkenhead, they moved to Penzance in later years, then grandad past away and now are both buried together in Witton Cemetery opposite Witton Lodge Rd.Image #87 is of the Aldridge Road outside Perry Park entrance. Think it's two ladies and a man riding their bikes. Looks about 1920s. One of the cyclists could even have been my nan ! She lived a little further back up the road (on College Road) in one of the bungalows in the 1920s. Viv.
Yes Vivienne that’s the sub Stn. just before the Aldridge road junction & The Boar’Head, would probably be at the side of the motorway viaduct now, but as been there since I can remember, my grandad told me a few stories about around there when he used to be on air raid fire duty WW.2 where once stood a anti-aircraft battery. That's interesting Eric. There's, what looks like, an electricity sub-station there now. Wonder if it's connected in any way ? Viv.
Ansell’s Timber Merchants I remember it been in the late 1950s.Would anyone be able to tell me whereabouts on Aldridge Road this picture was taken please ?
Yes they are still there, this being February 2025, though to the left of these properties as recently being cleared where Mellow Ware once stood and as for the property in question it as been built up to so looks as if things are safe for the time being.I wouldn't be surprised in the houses on the right are still there but the wall, looks a little unsafe, it is well shored up so that has probably gone.
