Is anyone researching the Akerman family? I have Thomas William Arnold Ackerman born about 1856 in Birmingham, and his brother Alfred Ackerman born in 1858. Alfred married a Birmingham girl and moved to London, but Thomas stayed in Birmingham, and also married a girl from Brum, Jane Martin in 1884.
There is a bit of a mystery about the birth of both brothers. On the 1861 census they are given the surname of Bellamy and are shown as children of my widowed 2 x gt.grandmother Ellen Bellamy (both being born after the death of her husband, John Bellamy).
In the 1871 census they are shown as boarders at Ellen Bellamy's house. In both censuses they are living at 1 house x 1 Court Coleshill Road. Thomas is now a Tin Maker, but Alfred is a Spectacle Maker. The trade of Spectacle Makers runs through the Bellamy family. There is now also another son aged 7 whose name is William Bellamy.
I am connected to Thomas twice. If I am right and Ellen Bellamy (my 2 x gt.grandmother) is his mother and his wife Jane Martin was the sister of my gt.grandfather, James Martin, then Thomas married his sister-in-law.
I have the marriage certificate of Thomas and Jane, and Thomas's father is shown as William Ackerman.
On FreeBMD there is the death of a William Ackerman in Birmingham in 1858 - this may have been their father.
The births of Thomas and Alfred weren't registered. I haven't yet found their baptisms but maybe next time I visit Brum I will have a look for them. Which would be the closest church to 1 Court, Coleshill Street, does anyone know?
Sorry if this is all bit complicated, but it is just another family mystery that I have found which I am trying to find out more about.
