Acton William b.1826

Mayfield

Burbury Brummie
I wish to trace the parents of William Acton b.1826 (Birmingham ?). Will the records office in Birmingham hold a copy of this birth certificate in order for me to trace his parents?

What year do the records office go back to for births, deaths and marriages?

Re: Birth: 1826

Hi Keith,

Civil registration only commenced in 1837 so there will not be a birth certificate.

You would need to check parish registers for a baptism.

I am sure others more knowledgeable will be able to direct you direct you to a source for those.

Re: Birth: 1826

Keith m8 :) adding to the good advice from Procat re 1837..

Re: Birth: 1826

Keith, there is a William Acton living in Yardley on the 1841 Census, Yardley in those days was in Worcestershire. He is shown as aged 20 which means he is anything from 20/25 as ages were rounded up or as in this case down to the nearest round fugure. The address was Coventry Road, he was an Agricultural Labourer living with a family called Thornton, and he was shown as not being born in Worcestershire.

Thanks Di but this is not the William Acton that I am tracing. In 1841 William should be about 13/14/15 ish with the head of the household being Thomas and Elizabeth Acton?

Re: Birth: 1826

Is this them, living in Little Barr Street, Deritend, in the 1841 census?

Borough of Birmingham;
Parish of Aston;
Hamlet of Deritend:
Ltl Barr St:
Thomas Acton, 41, Porter;
Elizabeth ditto, 47;
William ditto, 13, Silver Plater;
Charles ditto, 12, ditto;
George ditto, 19, ditto:

Re: Birth: 1826

If William's marriage certificate confirms Thomas, then this might be William's parents marriage. Thomas Acton married Elizabeth Lees 13th April 1818 at Aston Juxta.

Re: Birth: 1826

Keith,

Aston Juxta is the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. The main church by Aston Hall.

Re: Birth: 1826

Yes Keith, Birmingham Library have the parish records for Aston Juxta (Aston Parish Church). That's on the 6th. floor of the Library.

Re: Birth: 1826

Keith,

An important point, not covered in 'How to research your Ancestors'. If you do decide to go to Birmingham's Main Library, I find it's always best to tie it in with lunch at Bacchus (Burlington Arcade).

p.s. Best if you go to the library first, or you may not make it!
