Acocks Green

Vines grown in glasshouses then. Not outdoor vineyards. And glad the bridge is still there. A nice piece of history. Thank goodness it was never part of any main vehicular route. That must have saved it from widening/replacement. Viv.

I am doing some research on the cinemas in Acocks Green and wonder if you are able to help.I am aware that the Picture Playhouse opened 1913 and closed in1929 but am unable to find any exact dates. Also I am aware of the last film played but am not aware of the opening film title. Any details you can give on these points or indeed any other information on the AG cinemas would be appreciated.

Hi. Does anyone recall the park keepers at Acocks Green Park, not sure of the name, but they were Lizzy be and Wally and had to a son Ted around 1949?

Yes. The 'scruffies' could be quite 'Brutal' in those types of situation. Woe betide any motorist that was slow in moving over as they would risk getting a gloved hand distorting the roof of their vehicle.;)

Ambulance Escorts aren't done unless absolutely necessary. I can remember one that started from a Coventry Hospital and ended at the old Accident Hospital. A serious Burns case. The idea (from the Control Room point of view) was that the Coventry Bikes would hand over to the Solihull Bikes who, in turn would hand over to the Central Bikes. That was the theory but, when travelling at those sort of speeds, radios are sort of difficult to listen to.:)

I seem to remember the vehicle 'count' at the 'Acci' was 14 vehicles + an Ambulance that had 'glanced' the offside wall on the left hand turn at the top end of Digbeth.:oops:

As to whether the Patient survived...............but it wasn't for lack of trying.

Five years ago and not totally sure. But is it Fox Hollies Rd just beyond Mayfield Rd and Westfield Rd looking North towards Warwick Rd.

My wife and I got married on 27th December 1965 and did our first grocery shop at Wrenson's, Acocks Green on 28th December. It was the first shop on the left in the village just after Dudley Park Road The manager was Mr Hatton. Some things you never forget.
We're still shopping but at ASDA, Minworth now.

Have not seen this before, so apologies if it this has been published elsewhere, but found this in the Transactions of the Birmingham Archeaological Society and thought it of interest. It concerns the possible source of the name "Acocks Green"

I think this 1950s image looks like something you’d find in a children’s book if the period. It looks very quaint. Can’t make out for sure if it’s a drawing or painting or painted photo image. My guess is it’s the latter.

Looking at the previous image in post #112 the building to the right must be the New Inns.

My memories of Acocks Green are being taken there by my Gran or Auntie Connie. I would have been given 2/6 pence to spend at Woolworths. Any combination of toys/sweets/books.I always remember buying Bumper Books, colouring books and books with cutouts of dolls and their wardrobe of clothes which were hooked over the figure with little paper shoulder flaps. It would be in mid 1950's.
