A WINTERS TALE
Winters day is ending
Her long night draws nigh
Full moon shines silver
An eye in the starry sky
Flowing river runs deep
Translucent ice begins to creep
Along either bank
Where tall rushes grow rank
Snow fills every hollow
Hiding Brer Rabbits burrow
Nose searching the air
Slinks Felix from his lair
When no-ones about
Shy Brock Badger sets out
With lumbering gait
So as not to be late
Owl on wings silent
Glides with keen intent
But sensitive snout
Warns Mouse he’s about
Light from farm window
Casts gray shadows on snow
Of tractor and plough
Hard the land to furrow now
Bird’s sleep fluffed feathered
Autumn’s life full measured
Icicles fringe guttering
Frozen leaf falls fluttering
Children sleep warm
The proud vagrant forlorn
While wind blows cold
Laying claim to the old
And the eye in the sky
Ringed with crystals on high
Unblinkingly sees all
Winters day is ending
Her long night draws nigh
Full moon shines silver
An eye in the starry sky
Flowing river runs deep
Translucent ice begins to creep
Along either bank
Where tall rushes grow rank
