Unable to find out what type of shop this was, but what a great photo of the female staff in 1898. I thought it might possibly be a draper’s shop, ladies wear or hat shop perhaps ? Personally I think the middle lady has chosen a hat that is completely wrongly proportioned ! Viv.

A agree Pete, lots of women were encouraged to wear extremely tight corsets to achieve a very small, or wasp, waists. Certainly, tightly laced corsets could change the shape of the rib cage and reduce lung capacity. There is still debates about if they can cause permanent damage.

Each to their own I suppose

A bit more research in Kelly's lists some managers of the Singer shop at 33 High Street Aston and it does not name a Mr Turner.
1895, 1897 and 1900

Later directories do not name the manager.
