Hi Phoebe - Samuel Davis - Lucy Clayton - Just read your thread. I am trying to find my grandmother's family - she was Annie Davis and had brothers called Samuel and George and sisters called Nellie and Ampliss. Is this your Davis family?

Hi golfy, sorry only just seen your post.

It's possible there's a connection, do you know the names of Annie's parents? My Samuel seems to have had a brother George, I wonder if they might have been uncles or great uncles of your Annie. When was she born?

My Davises are not straightforward to research as they were Gypsies, their baptisms are all over the place and Samuel's parents don't seem to have registered any of the births.

Ampliss is an unusual name and may indicate Gypsy ancestry, they do go in for some exotic names.

Hi Phoebe - thanks for your reply. My grandmother Annie is difficult to place - I think her parents may have been Thomas and Alice - also think her other siblings were Doris, Nellie, Ernest Thomas, Lily, George, Samuel and Ampliss. I think Annie was born around 1894. Unfortunately I have very little to go on - I do know that she married my grandfather George Mitchell when she was 19 but can't find the marriage anywhere. (my dad - Annie and George's son) always told me they met and married in Canada but can't find any marriage there). Its very difficult to research when there is nothing much to go by - a lot of it is guesswork, but will keep on trying!!! I just wondered if your Samuel Davis could be my Annie's brother? Do the dates fit? Do you know Samuel's parents names? Much appreciate any help you can offer.

Regards

It's tricky, I'm feeling my way with this family too! I have a working tree for them, but a lot is still unconfirmed. I think there could be 14 siblings of which my gt gt grandfather Matthew may be one, but still haven't absolutely proved it.

Samuel was born c1836, so can't be your Annie's brother. However he did have a brother called Thomas, who could be the grandfather of your Annie. This Thomas was married to a Mary Ann, but I haven't found them after 1861 yet. There are also a couple of other brothers I have yet to trace, who might be her grandfather.

Samuel's parents were called John and Ann, but I don't have definite ages/places of birth for them. We cannot find the family at all in 1841, but Gypsies/travellers weren't recorded on that census so that's probably why.
