314 Summer Lane

thecapt

Brummie babby
My "Shelley" ancestors lived at 314 Summer Lane for quite some years, around the 1930's up to the 1950's. I have photo's of a house which I believe is 314, however I'm not sure (see attached). It was right next to the "Victoria Works" on Summer Lane and close to the Newey factory which I believe were bombed during raids in 1940/41. I've seen pretty much every inch of Summer Lane apart from this area... Is there anything out there.... :) BTW - Far Right, Mr William Henry Shelley Esq.

hi thecapt and welcome...great photo but some how it does not look like the type of house that would have been on summer lane...however i could be wrong..the newey factory is in brearley st off summer lane and is still there..do you have anymore photos of the house you could share please and we can maybe help with a definate location for you...for now click on the map below which shows no 314 summer lane and if you move the blue dot to the left the map will fade out and show you what is there now you can also move the map around the area...thanks

Thank you Astoness.... Yeah, I'm not sure where it is to be honest. Seemingly they are dressed up to go somewhere (wedding maybe). My theory was that it was a house with seemingly no "back of" association, maybe 313/314 combined below. My other theory is that the photo could be something to do with a wedding and therefore somewhere close to a church... Hence the interest in the actual 314.

I think same house, same event, same 3 men... William back seat, closest to the house... Actually looks a bit too rural at the back to be middle of Brum now I look at it again. I also appreciate the factory butts right up against 314 on the map... I had thought this photo pre-factory. But now I'm not convinced.

yes i agree 2nd photo is the same house...looking again at the map i posted there is no gap between numbers 314 and 315 they are joined but in your 2nd photo there is a definite gap so i am still thinking that your photos are not of no 314 summer lane they look too rural to me as well..just my thoughts though..i will try and do a bit more digging for you..do you have william shelleys date of birth please..

Yes, I had "imagined" that the photo was pre-factory, but the more I look, the more it probably isn't. Could be a rectory building at a church maybe...

Williams parents George and Mary Ann Shelley (Nee Riley) lived there for quite some time (Mary Ann throughout WW2 it seems).
