200 years of Nelson in the Bull Ring

Tacitus

master brummie
Hi

I have just made a post in the "Statues and Monuments" section about the bi-centenary of the Nelson statue in the Bull Ring.

https://forum.birminghamhistory.co.uk/showthread.php?p=178195#post178195

I am working on an exhibition for the Central Library and there are a couple of images that I would like to try and track down.

The first one is the view of the Bull Ring below which I believe is by the artist Robert K Calvert.

Is there anywhere that I could buy a copy of this print? - or get hold of a high resolution scan to use on a display board.

The second image I am trying to find is a colour one of the statue on the "balcony" above the outdoor market. I have got a couple of really nice black & white photos - one with the children's roundabout next to it - and one looking over the roofs of the market stalls.

But these would look so much better if they were in colour!

Can anyone help me with this - or point me in the right direction.

Thanks very much if you can help in any way - and I will keep you up to date through the other thread as the exhibition starts to come together.

Best wishes

T

Thank you very much for pointing me in that direction.

I should have said in my post that I had actually come across that thread - but because Oisin's picture is framed with glass in front I assumed it would be impractical to try and take a scan from it.

BUT I had missed the fact that Robert Calvert, the artist, had actually made a post on the thread. He says it is quite a rare print - so I feel better now that I have found it hard to locate a copy.

I will see if Robert is still contactable via the Private Mail system and check if there is any way that he can help.

Thanks again.

I don't know if you are aware. I visited Key Hill cemetery in Hockley today. While there I was told a record had been located from a memorial transcription list of a man who was a hero from the battle of Waterloo. I don't know how much is known but I will try and find out more.

Hi Tacitus:

There is another painting circ. 1950, that I know of which would show Nelson in the Bull Ring. It used to be available online but doesn't seem to be around. There is reference to it on the artist's site. His name is Brian Tovey and he runs a gallery in Hampton-in Arden. Here's the link: https://www.kingsheathbusinesses.org/member_pages/briantovey.htm

Here is another link to the Bull Ring and Nelson through BMAG:

There are coins and a Japanned Tray on here which might be of some use
for pictures, etc.

Here is another link of a charcoal drawing from "Gentleman's Magazine:

Thanks Jenny

I will follow up on all these leads.

I am especially interested in anything in colour.

By definition most of the photos/drawings prior to the 1960's are black & white. So anything with some colour in will brighten up the display and hopefully attract people's attention and interest.

Still a long way to go but it's going to be a very interesting project to be involved in.

Thanks again

Hi Tacitus:

It is certainly a worthwhile project and it wil take some research, etc.
well should mention hard work as well. I may be visiting Birmingham around that time which would mean I would be able to see the exhibition.
