1960s & 1970s buildings

That's good Astonian. Nice to see planning depts can sometimes get it right. I do like the way this has been transformed into housing without destroying either the building itself or the setting. I'm now curious to go and have a look round the place. Viv.

Britannic Assurance once built offices on the Wake Green Road in Moseley (in the 1990s I think). But when it closed, they demolished it and built new homes.

Compare ellbrowns 2 pics in post 24 of the Queens Head, the first full of character and interest (albeit somewhat dingy) the second bland and boring, why oh why cannot they restore such frontages instead of knocking them down and replacing them with glass and concrete, I remember years ago they (Bham Council) were going to knock the old Post Office down until the public uproar made them retain the frontage. Eric

A great find Ell. Many thanks. This is how I remember the Britannic with all that open space in front of the building. Viv.

can somebody tell me why birmingham is a permanent building site i went up (the) bullring the other day (the) bullring that they spent a fortune on redeveloping, and walking up past st martins it is all boarded off and and they are building some sort of italian eaterie do you think it is bad planning and would have been more cost effective to have built it when redevelopment was taking place as they are now digging up all the concrete that has just been laid (i presume) who is looking after th purse strings?
phil

They are building new restaurants in the Spiceal Street area. The last full redevelopment there was about 10 years ago. Unfortunetly it meant they had to remove the Spiral Cafe and the Three Cubs fountain that was there. www.spicealstreet.co.uk

This is only for the square at the bottom of the hill near St Martin's Church.

Yes there is loads of construction sites in Birmingham. And also loads of demolished sites waiting to be built on again.

Looking at these pics, the buildings to me all look the same, heartless bland glass and concrete edifices without an ounce of character, of course that is my personal opinion no doubt many will disagree. As a watercolourist with buildings as a favourite subject none of them appeal to me. now the old library, town hall old snow hill station etc.... now your'e talking !!! Eric
