I am trying to find details of my g-g-g-grandfather's marriage at St. Martin's.
IGI shows that Benjamin Evetts married Sarah Thompson on 13 Aug 1838.
Can anyone provide any further details, especially the names of the fathers?

Also, a supplementary question, if this is the correct place to post it.
Can anyone suggest why they married in the city centre, when both were born in Smethwick (c.1818) according to all the censuses, and certainly lived in Smethwick from 1839 onwards. I believe that the vicar(s) at both Smethwick and Oldbury had their marriage licences withdrawn during that time period, but I am curious as to why they would travel all the way to the city centre, rather than use another local church.

Many thanks,

Keith

Wendy,

Thank you very much for your reply. And as you say, the canal link is likely to be the reason for the St Martin's marriage.

Best regards,
