I've been searching for a Mr M J Butcher of 12 Cherry Street, Birmingham. He made application for planning permission to build 22 houses in Florence Road, Wylde Green in 1903. These properties became Florence Avenue.

I've found 12 Cherry Street which appears to be offices and only the caretaker, John Beaumont, is listed on Find my Past in 1911. Is it possible to find out whether Mr Butcher was an agent for another company? There has been a suggestion that the houses were built for railway workers.

The owner of the land was a Mr W Frazier of Trinity Road, Handsworth and the 1901 census lists him as a Brewer's Traveller so no clues there.

A visit to the Wolfson Centre is planned, to look at the building plans, is but not until February and these don't always give the information you'd like.

On the 1901 census there is a Matthew J Butcher listed in Aston/Sutton Coldfield. He is listed as an Architect.

In 1911 he is listed as Retired, industry listed as Building Trade.
 
Thank you all for your input. Architects and auctioneers sound much more likely than a brewer's employee. I'm hoping to find out who actually built these houses and it doesn't look as though they have anything to do with the railway so far. However, I'm not dismissing that yet.

Pedro, I'm attaching a picture of the entry in the Register of Planning Applications for Sutton. It's a scan of a screen shot so not a very good photo. However, it shows the names of the applicant and owner.

The William Frazier at Trinity Road on 1901 census is listed as a brewer/traveller

His son is listed as an auctioneer and there is this entry in the commercial section

So - is it the son who has applied and who is on the census under his middle name?
 
Thank you for this information. I don't think, at this stage, that there is any connection to the railway. I checked all the houses on the 1911 census and there are no railway workers living there. I will add it to my February visit to the Archives and look at the plans but I'm pretty sure the suggestion was a red herring.
