104 Wheeler Street

Can anyone help - I'm trying to get a photo of the bakery that used to be in Wheeler Street at 104 - it would have been called G E Amos & Son. It would have been there for late 1930's through to the 1950's.

there is a wheeler street thread with some photos on but off hand i dont know if any show the bakery you are looking for

Thanks, I've scoured the Internet and can't find anything with a recognisable picture of the shop. My Mum's husband was brought up in the shop and has just recently finished writing about his life and thought a picture would be a nice present.

I believe this to be the junction of Wheeler Street looking north, if so then number 104 would be about the 5th shop up on the right past the junction. I'm sorry it is not a better photo or closer, but I'll keep looking.

Phil,

That's a brilliant start, thank you - it's far closer than I've come so far. Hopefully it will still bring back memories for Gerry. Very much appreciated.

I would say ,that the first picture is correct,The shop on the corner, is Chapmans, the Greengrocer, then a tobacco shop, Cowdrills Bike shop, Shipmans chemist, & then Amos Bakery , I was friends with their daughter during the war. & remember that she had a brother, Which would be your mom's husband.
I lived in Farm st , My mom had a fish & chip shop there.

Jean , Riverside California.

i had two sisers lived in wheeler street in the 1930s but i was too young to remember the address i know i had to fetch a midwife from nearby when my niece was born this would have been 1939 as i was 10 years old at the time

Jean,

thats brilliant Betty was the daughter and Gerald is my Mum's husband. I wasn't sure whether it showed the correct shop and obviously can't show Gerry as its a surprise birthday present for him.

I'm terribly sorry but I have no idea where the photo came from, the only criteria I have when I collect photos of the internet is that I check that they are not specifically copyrighted. I've looked in my collection and there are no notes where it was sourced from and the copy I have is of the same resolution as what I posted.

All I can suggest is that you take a copy of the one that is posted and get someone with a photo editing program to tidy it up if it is all possible and then print it out.
