1 St Martin's Row, Shoeingsmith Then Hauliers In 1908

Hi all

Harry Charles Strawbridge was listed at the above address, firstly as a shoeingsmith and then a haulier in 1908.

What kind of property would be at 1 St Martin's Row?

First thought was that it must be by St Martin's church but anyway here's a map from 1950, it lists no 1 as the long building on the corner. I don't know if the numbers were the same in 1905.

The 1911 census lists the number of rooms for properties which, if you can find it, should give you some idea of the size.

And finally if you search 'St Martin's Row Birmingham' on google images, the first picture is supposedly one of St Martin's Row though comparing it to the map it look more like St Martin's Place which adjoins it.

This is a picture was labelled St Martins Place, but I believe it should read St Martins Row from St Martins Place. No 1 would be to the left out of view.

Great info Janice and Mikejee. Thanks for the pic, it is great to see these old pictures even if they don't relate to my family history, but it's quite magical looking at the photo and thinking that the Strawbridge's would have been on these streets!

Unreal!

It's hard to imagine with how the Broad St area is now that a street like the above is where it is. It just looks so out of place.

Also that motorbike and sidecar looks damn uncomfortable.

The old buildings look great with their chimneys etc. And the cobbled foot paths. I don't know if it's me, but the old pics look so full of character and history, amazing.

After showing a family member this pic tonight he wondered if it was taken looking towards Cambridge St? And if so, would it show the back of the house of 83? Next to the Prince of Wales public house?

You can see the back of 3 buildings in Cambridge St. Unfortunately no 83 would have been the next one to the right

Ok, thanks Mikejee, but great to see where the back of the houses were in relation to St Martin's Row.
