Thank you, the business failed the early 1960s, he died in 1964. If I remember correctly he was bought out for redevelopment.

It's got to be The Swan, then, it feels right, he was buried at Yardley. And the Haberdashery Shop was, as I understand, demolished for redevelopment. I see it was redeveloped in the 60s for a shopping centre and roundabout for Coventry Rd. Thank you.

He was only running the Angel for a handful of months before the court case then? He must have run others. Is there a particular reference site/publication for Birmingham landlords? I am aware he had a business in Small Heath or local vicinity called: Usher's Habbidashery. Though nothing can be...

Looking at the area today compared with the older map, it appears that what is left of the old Taylor St is now Chadsmoor Terrace. I am jumping to this conclusion as Fowler St still leads into Freeman Rd. Is that the correct assumption...

Hi, Mikejee, this is brilliant stuff. I shared the Birmingham rates book (above), so he was there at 277 in 1911. But looks like it was gone by 1950. I am struggling with the map to know which 277 is, and from the photos. Is 277 the corner? Thanks so much, everybody, this is fabulous stuff to see.

Hi, Lyn, yes, The Plough and Harrow, 277 Bloomsbury Street. My great grandfather was Samuel James Johnson. The hotel manager at the time, 1911. It's long been demolished... I see from Google street views it's a new build school now. Thanks!

And again, much appreciated, so he obviously did live in then. I need to find a photo as this has long been demolished. There's nothing online that I can find, a shame.

Utterly fantastic, thank you. A vague family conversation from countless years back now confirmed as accurate and the dates completely tally with the court case. Thank you very, very much! This really is sincerely appreciated.

Greetings, all. I have just joined as at the tender age of 54, I am researching my family tree. I found this thread most fascinating, my family all originate from Aston and Sparkbrook. Grandfather "John Henry Usher" was a publican who was prosecuted in 1954 for embezzlement from the brewery...
