    Oldknow Road Small Heath

If it's Oldknow Road in SmallHeath (off the Coventry Road) there was a labour exchange, so-called, at the end by the railway. We used to creep up a passageway at the side and sit on the edge of a 20 foot wall overhanging the railway trainspotting. No fences in those days but it was 65+ years ago!

Well Joanne, have finally got the photos available. I do now have much larger resolutions on my computer but the files are too big for this site. Hope you can identify your dad.

    Saltley Secondary School

I will try an scan the long school panoramic pictures-each one is about 40 inches long so not easy and I will wait for my more able son to assist me next week when he is about. I think there will be several images which will need printing out and joining up. I will put them on the forum site...

    Saltley Secondary School

Hi. I was at Saltley at the same time as your dad, from 1954 to 61. His name just about rings a bell with me, but I have no other recollection. Sad about your dad but nice to try and get memories for the family. We were probably in different forms. Two class photos attached and I have found...

    Saltley Secondary School

Yes, the bank was the strict limit for pupils though having been a founder member of the model areoplane club we were allowed access at times. Woodwork was in the concrete building, we thought nothing of it , lets face it , it was the early '50s and much war damage was still evident in the area...

    Saltley Secondary School

Have been looking through the Saltley threads of the last few weeks and they have brought back many happy memories for me as I was there from 1954 to 1961, certainly so long ago as to make me a real old boy. Perhaps we never appreciated it at the time but the school set me up so well for my...

    Toy/Model Shops City Centre

In the late 1950's myself and two or three friends often called into Perrys shop opposite the Capitol after school just to have a good chat with the owner. Very nice owner and very tolerant with us though he was probably glad when we eventually left as we could not afford to buy much being only...

    Dollman Street Stores Discussion Here

Have been to Dollman Street a few times and it is interesting and worth the time to go, when permitted. I did hear several months ago that there was going to be a new museum in the Lea Hall/Meadway area. Nothing since. I was disappointed some time ago when I went to Birmingham Museum with my...

My wife, then Carole Young of Castle Bromwich, was at Achbishop Williams from 1959 till 1963 and was head girl from 1962 to 1963. She remembers most of the teachers names and is still fiends with some of her class mates.

    Mackie & Gladstone

Hi samhistory. Don't know if this is of any revelance but Mackie and Gladstone ran a string of off-licences in the Birmingham area, possibly also under the name of Alsopps. No longer about but my grandmother ran one or two, about 100 years ago! She was also in service to a Mr L Gladstone and Mr...
