    Kings Norton school

"Kings Norton School" ie the old grammar school had no connection with the workhouse. By 1906/07 there was no longer a separate workhouse for Kings Norton. The Kings Norton Union Workhouse which covered Kings Norton was at Selly Oak and later became Selly Oak Hospital. The only school at that...

    Kelly's Directories

Finally the penny dropped! Odd way of listing them. Thanks everyone. Time to renew my Ancestry sub. Next question - is there a site where I can view Kellys BHam Directories after 1940. I think they were published up to 1974? Thanks again.

    Kelly's Directories

Thanks for that. I have let my Ancestry sub expire for the time being but I don't think the Warwickshire Directories include Birmingham? Any other suggestions folks?

    Morland Braithwaite Photography

Morland Braithwaite's Moseley studio was at 103 Alcester Road in 1940 [Kellys] on the Parade. I came across this postcard for sale on Ebay taken by Morland of the great hall at Swarthmoor Hall in Cumbria. Not sure how long he was in Moseley. His photographic subjects were wide ranging.

J.T. Howarth & Co. Umbrella Makers.

My final word [well maybe!]. Came across this phot dated 1962 showing Midland Bank at 97/99 Alcester Road and a further reference to the bank at 97/99 in 1948. Clearly the Moseley Society got it wrong to suggest Howarths were there in 1981.! Sad really, but this is how mistakes get perpetuated...

J.T. Howarth & Co. Umbrella Makers.

Lovely adverts. Mentions that they took over Howarths in 1923 including premises at 11 Bull Street. This makes me wonder about the accuracy of my comment in post 4 above that they were in Moseley Village until 1981. This was based on list of Moseley Shops in 1981 produced by the Moseley Society...

J.T. Howarth & Co. Umbrella Makers.

Many thanks for that. Checked again and found: "The successful man is nearly always the well-dressed man, but a poor umbrella will kill the most expensive suit. However, one of our special "Defiance" umbrellas (only 10/6d) will add lustre and polish to the tailor's art. Try one at J.T Howarth...

J.T. Howarth & Co. Umbrella Makers.

Howarth & Co., Umbrella Makers Howarths had premises at 8,9&11 Bull Street and at 56 High Street. Haven’t been able to trace any information about them. They made and repaired umbrellas. They were also noted for their brilliant and humourous adverts. Looking at them, the costumes etc look...

    Longbridge Factory

Have now carried out a bit more research on line and yes Crusader tanks were made at Longbridge although as Godber mentioned the main production site was at Nuffield/Drews Lane. One site suggests that tank parts, specifically over 36,000 suspension units, were made at Longbridge rather than...

    Longbridge Factory

Came across this phot for sale on Ebay. Said to be tank assembly at Longbridge Plant about 1941. Never heard of that before [I knew they made aeroplanes for the war effort] . Can anyone vouch for this or identify it as Longbridge from roof structure etc?

    Birmingham Register Offices

Back in 1905 when Moseley was in the Kings Norton R.D. the local office for registering births & deaths was in Woodbridge Road. Perhaps worth repeating a couple of illus from Woodbridge Road thread. Registrar was in the tall building on the right at the far end...

    Birmingham Register Offices

As pointed out in post 6 above, after 1837 Regisitration was based initially on Poor Law Union areas. There were originally four Registration Districts [=R.D.] covering what is now Birmingham. These were Birmingham [the borough] which was quite tiny at the time!, Aston which covered a much...

    Cars

Never been a car "buff". My present car is a Ford Focus Ghia all of 21 years old! A lovely car - never let me down. Before that for many years I had a Ford Sierra - another great car. Can't remember how long I had it for - but old. In the end cost of body repairs for MOT persuded me to replace...

    Armstrong, Stevens & Son

Many thanks Mike. Just briliant. Wonderful example of Georgian architecture. What a shame that this and so much of the Gun Quarter was demolished. Your phot enabled me to trace another Nicklin phot in 1963 - shows the Armstrong works [shortly?] after demolition.

    Armstrong, Stevens & Son

Armstrong, Stevens & Son Ltd. Came across this on ebay and did a bit of simple research on line. Firm was founded in 1835! with premises for many years at 15 Whittall Street. They later had a factory in Willenhall. It is no longer an independent company. The 1914 Directory lists them as...
