    Does anyone remember when they installed carpets on the stairs a Snow Hill Station? They did not last all that long, but the TV did run a news story.

    They were indeed and I can remember the man who wound up the clock in the gas street lamps each month would travel from lamp to lamp on a bike with to pannier bags with tools and mantels and he would carry the ladder on his shoulder.

    It sounds like when the Birmingham Corporation built public utility’s like baths, they did go all out to build quality and things that supported health and wellbeing

    I recall that Erdington Baths had a Turkish Bath section. It had a lot of ornate tiling in the hot room and quite a nice plunge pool too.

    Thanks, that has just reminded me of what Jack Hargraves once said about why a boxing ring is called a ring when is square. It was a circular ring of posts for prize fighting but if the police turned up, they could quickly dismantle and hide four posts amongst the crowd.

    Excellent. The hand planed raised panel draw bottoms were common before the mid-19th century. The idea being the ½ thick bottom panel would create a weak area on the draw side rebates (rabbets) so they were slimed down to ¼ inch. Interestingly, this was the precursor of the raised panel door...

    Thanks for the phots. So far so good. The hand cut dovetails indicate its possibly pre 1895 and the hardwood draw sides and bottoms indicate its English. American draws tend to be made in popular. That single board wide draw bottom looks great too. Can I ask you for a picture of the underside...

    If you take that bottom centre draw out and photograph the dovetail joints on the front and back corners, we can get a better guess at its age and authenticity.
