    Birmingham fatal drownings 20th Century

Both Witton Lakes and Brookvale Park had their fairs share of drowning incidents, quite few I am told at Brookvale Park. If your researching country wide that the River Severn will be a source too. This river was navigable right up to Welshpool, a lot of activity took place from large boats to...

Moseley Tea & Honey Shop ?

Its got me thinking. I did try a reverse image search, but to no avail. The house and outbuilding seem to be cut into sloping ground so maybe Salsbury Road by the hall or near to Park hill?

    Highbury Historic Park

A changing Skyline in the View from Highbury Park I was out doing some photogrammetry drone work for the Friends of Highbury Historic Park a community group. I could not resist a quick snap of the city centre and its evolving skyline. As a kid the skyline if you could see it through the...

    Highbury Historic Park

I popped out to Highbury Park today to do some 3D photogrammetry mapping of some of the historic field marking for a very switched on and welcoming Friends of Highbury Park Group. What I am trying to do is to help and encourage them to take responsibility for supporting the landscape and places...

    Prefabs

Yes, some were, the ones with a pitch roof like the Avoncroft prefab. There were some along Slade Road Erdington that had flat roofs with felt, but the council did convert them to pitch roofs in about 1970.

    Prefabs

Interesting thought that. They were of course cladded with cement based asbestos sheeting externally. I don’t know how much was used inside, most likely the bath and a few other panels. I have a feeling there was some insulation around pipes and tanks too. The external cladding was sealed quite...

    Prefabs

Thanks for the update. I have seen and been in the Avoncroft several times. I don’t know the model but its identical the one that were on Court Lane Erdington adjacent to Short Heath Park. I think there were a couple of different models

Royal Flying Corps Officers Billeted Out 1915-18

Ok got it. It’s a photo from the Bill Dargue website, a Birmingham historian who had spent years researching. It’s a super site. Its looks like his research is post WWI so maybe not be any use in this case, but here a link for completeness.

    Crooked house

Richard, that the problem in my opinion. I am all for small businesses and startups, they need support but also some regulation. In the UK Company’s house does zero monitoring so we get a lot of wannabe developers who destroy historic building and then liquidate the company. The crooked house...

Royal Flying Corps Officers Billeted Out 1915-18

I think this photo was posted on a face book group some time back so cannot validate its location, or date but the file name is suggestion its Castle Brom Airfield and looks like the temporary wartime accommodation that was in Spring Lane Erdington.

    Crooked house

The problem I see with this and a few other sites that have been destroyed is Company’s House. It ridiculously easy to set up a limited liability company and register it with them. If there is a full stop or a comer missing from the return or it’s a day late company’s house will find them, but...

Aeroplane Crash - Oval Road, Gravelly Hill - 1916

Unfortunately, he was not the best conversationalist with kids, we were here to be seen and not heard, so I never really had much in the way of meaningful conversations with him. A lot of what I know about him is anecdotal from my own father. There were photos of him in an RAC uniform, but when...

Aeroplane Crash - Oval Road, Gravelly Hill - 1916

My grandfather who by coincidence lived just off Gravelly Hill was a WWI flight engineer and pilot. He also said that there were a lot of flying accidents then; said he witnessed a fatality a week. He had a couple of close calls and did a couple of forced landing where he had to hedgehop while...

Aeroplane Crash - Oval Road, Gravelly Hill - 1916

Well, that sounds like one of those story’s that could endure. I have this memory of seeing a photo of an event near Gravelly hill, but it’s quite vague. In 1916 flying was still in its infancy and there were a lot of mishaps. I recently was able to help a history group in Netherseal who had a...

    Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery

I thought he same too, absolutely underwhelming. Its has the look of a place that’s got no identity or theme, so a committee chucked a whole load of ideas in the melting pot and tried to incorporate all of them, badly. Its still a museum that wants to tell you what they think you should know.
