Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Hi Lyn, Janice, Dad remembered Mum's family lived in Hockley for a short while, too - not for long apparently.

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Hi Lyn, I believe that was especially the case during the Great Famine of the 1800s. At that time, many either emigrated to the US or to Liverpool. But I know whenever we travelled to and fro we would always go via Holyhead in Wales.

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Hi Lyn, you're so good to go to all that trouble but please don't go out of your way. You've already sent so much great information. AFAIK they did live in Birmingham but they kept moving around. For example, they lived above a doctor's surgery in Moseley area at one point. But they may well...

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

That is such a major finding, thanks so much Lyn. So they lived there for what was probably Mum's senior school years. It's a pity the place is now demolished! And no comment on the present architecture! Thank you Janice, I'm wondering is that because it may take a few years to get on the eroll?

    Upper Highgate School for Girls

Long shot as I'm not certain my mother went here, but does anyone remember Anna (nee Brennan) or my aunt Mildred (nee Brennan) who may have gone to this school late 50s-early 60s? I see comments from several here who were in the school during that era. They lived on Moseley Rd from c.1958 to...

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Thank you very much again, Lyn. Dad also said she used to get the train from Snow Hill station to Quinton. That seems to suggest the school must have been near a railway station. Poor thing had a lot of travelling around to and from school!

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

That's great info as well, Janice. It sounds very plausible - I'll follow up. Many thanks again for your kind help!

1950s: post primary girls Catholic school, Stonehouse Lane, Quinton. But next to nothing is immediately available online.

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Mum was sleepy this evening so she was unable to tell me much. But Dad says she attended a school in Quinton, if that raises any known candidates? But I see only one Catholic school, a girls primary school, and that only opened in 1967.

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

This suggests that Upper Highgate School for Girls, which was on Moseley Rd near Highgate Place, Balsall Heath, is a strong candidate for one of the schools Mum or my aunt Mildred might have attended? I know that they didn't go to the same school for at least some of their school years.

Oh wow, that's a jewel of information! Thank you very much Janice!

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Yes, that was indeed their house and I remember many happy visits there. Sadly it looks as though it has fallen into disrepair! My granddad had done a really lovely garden at the back (he was a qualified botanist/horticulturist), although he didn't work in that field for the most part AFAIK.

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

I'll ask her when I see her later today. The name Olton or Inky might well trigger a memory, but I'm not sure if she'll give a definite response.

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Thanks so much Lyn. Yes, I'm sorry I can't provide you with more information. Some 10 years ago she did give me the name of one school in or around Moseley that she attended. I only wish I had made more note of it.

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

That's very interesting and sounds very plausible. I will ask her that! Many thanks indeed for the great information and I'll be sure to let you know if she remembers.

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Hi Janice, Good point. She is Catholic and it's likely that all or most schools she went to were Catholic. One of them was definitely a private school, which as far as I know, was also Catholic. So that might narrow it down a bit again?

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

That is wonderful. Thanks again Lyn, it's really very much appreciated, especially given the lack of information. here is the earliest photo I have of Mum which is from after the time in question. She also worked in the tax office in the city centre for a short while, but left in 1966 when I was...

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Hi Janice, Unfortunately, Mum's teen years are the one time we've no photos at all! She was/is very beautiful with a great smile and had very straight red hair - that's everyone's, not just my point of view!

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Hi Lyn, That's a great idea about the electoral roll and I'd be so much obliged. You're also right, she was born in 1943. She was born in Dublin on October 3rd 1943, but moved with her family to Birmingham at age 12. So I'm guessing that was 1955 but it could also have been early 1956. Her...

Anna Brennan - went to school in Birmingham

Hi Lyn, Thank you for your reply. Sadly, my Mum has dementia and is unable to say. But she does remember some things and if prompted my hope is to give her a name, a friend, address or school - something along those lines - that might trigger a special memory for her. Hopefully there is someone...
