    Royal Warwickshire Regiment WW1

They probably did. The 12th Bn of the Royal Warwicks was a "Garrison" battalion made up of older soldiers, many of whom had seen service in the closing stages of WWI (you can see from the photo that they look a bit older). They were used to guard depots and lines of communication in France. The...

    Research about my grandfather

As Alberta said, most large hospitals were paid for by charity. It was a very different dynamic than nowadays, Hospitals were seen to be places for poor people. The rich would be treated at home. Even minor surgery would be done at home. If they did go into hospital for major surgery the rich...

    Colmore row

Please, whatever you do, don't make it graffiti! - a less appropriate place for graffiti would be hard to find. Murals have a sad history in Birmingham, they tend to last only a few years or be moved. Hated when they are first put up and then wistfully remembered in nostalgia a few years after...

    Weoley Castle Traffic "Islands".

The area centred on Weoley Castle Square, bounded by Alwold Road in the North, Castle Road in the East, Shenley Fields Road in the South and Shenley Lane dual-carriageway in the West, has a number of traffic "islands" with the main roads cutting through the middle of them. For example, the one...

    Farm near Aston Hall

Agreed, It's going to be either just to the South of the River Tame - maybe around where Village Road is now, or just the other side of the river where the Aston Villa Academy is now. That area was built over even in the oldest map I can find. (1830). There was a Witton Farm along that line of...

    Brief encounter in Temple Row

I see from doing an image search that it was published in the 6th Feb 1954 edition of "Picture Post" magazine to illustrate an article called "The Best and Worst of British Cities".

    Brief encounter in Temple Row

Wow! what a brilliant photo! Well done Mark!- It's the corner where Cafe Nero is now. The lampost looks to still be there (the further one in the modern picture below), although the stone post has long gone. The photographer must have got down on their knees to frame the shot.

    Billesley Common Airfield

Hi Alan, Off-topic, but to answer your question. The nearest reception airfield for British POWs was RAF Cosford near Wolverhampton. The other reception airfields were Westcott , Wing and Oakley, all in Buckinghamshire, and Dunsfold in Surrey. POWs had no say in which airfield they were sent to...
