    Morland Braithwaite Photography

The earliest newspaper mention for Morland Braithwaite was the making of a film called Youth Hails Adventure for the Youth Hostels Association in 1934 with another local, Norman Blinkhorn as Technical Advisor. A copy of this film is held in the National Archives along with other YHA materials...

    Market Hall 1835 - 1963

Crime of the Century as far as Brum was concerned. I miss that shell of a building more than any other from my childhood. And all the friendly people - the Bull Ring is not the same any more. Maurice

    Hairdressing & barbering

Dave, I hate having my hair cut, but the guy that cut my hair in Elounda for many years could do the whole job from start to finish in 3 minutes flat without trying to engage me in conversation! Being deaf and having to take hearing aids out and then having the hairdresser try to engage you in...

Now, can you find a modern City Centre skyline that doesn't incorporate a crane? :) :) :) Maurice

    Warwick Road Greet

Jim, Exactly what I described above. Can't help with your location, but mine came from the little shop operated by the Birch family in Knowle Road, Sparkhill adjacent to the allotments entrance, now back to being just a normal house. Maurice

    Warwick Road Greet

Paul, If that money on bottle returns was still operating, a few shrewd operators could even make a living out of it! :) But I used to like the penny bottles of pop, which was just a flavour tablet dropped in the bottle and then filled with soda water, and you drank there and then on the spot...

    Lost Birmingham Pubs

Hence the stupid modern names like Slug & Lettuce and Glasshopper that seem to abound these days. Maurice

    Hairdressing & barbering

Dave, She asks for 10 euros, but she has a little salon in Neapoli 7 minutes away by car/taxi, so I always give her a fair tip as I recoup that that from the saved taxi fare. We're both happy with that arrangement. Well done, Phil, I wish I had your confidence. They've just put the whole...

    Saint Peters church Bickenhill

Eric, I don't know this particular church, but you've got some nice 3D effects there. Altogether a very satisfying picture, but then your paintings never disappoint. I like it, and so did the purchaser. :) Maurice

John from Staffs, Keep commenting, even if of interest to one member. At some point in the future, some new member may pick up on your comment, as they often do, and will be grateful for the information it contains. If we ever get fed up, you'll soon hear about it! :) When a thread has run its...

    Asylum Road

Puggy, Welcome to the Forum. There's a basic history here:- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birmingham_Gazette As to distribution, I wouldn't have thought it was much outside a 20 Miles radius of Birmingham. I lived in Brum until 1961 and well remember it, but our paper of choice was always the...

    Hairdressing & barbering

Phil, I amazed that you can use clippers on the back your head. I would need to be double-jointed and have no arthritis. Jan has offered to "have-a-go", but I'm a bit wary of that - a bit like getting the roofer to do brain surgery. I will leave it until sometime next week when I have a free...

    Hairdressing & barbering

All my life I have hated having my hair cut, so as a child, I always had a "mommy-cut", but she didn't do too bad a job of it. But my childhood friends all knew that my mother cut both my hair and that of my younger brother, and somehow (probably because someone blabbed) I acquired the nickname...

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Susan, In response to your question in post #448, In 2000, C&A announced its intention to withdraw from the British market, where it had been operating since 1922, and the last UK retail stores closed in 2001. Primark bought 11 of the C&A stores. And this was years before the Brexit...

    Windows 10

Just had a major Windows 10 (64 bit) update Build 19042. Everything seems to work after taking best part of half an hour to install. Can't see any major difference, certainly doesn't run any faster, but all my usual software seems to work OK. Maurice

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

In 1978, J Lyons was sold to Allied Breweries as it had been in decine since the early 1960s, so it's probably likely that shops were closing well before then. Their computer interests had already been sold to English Electric some years earlier. I used to use the one on the corner of Tottenham...
