    Old street pics..

And three years before I was born, Sue, but this one is the first front-end-on pic of it that I have seen. And so much detail in these pics too. The remainer are generally taken at an angle and lack the detail. Maurice

    Sandfields Waterworks Pumping Engine

Mort, That was a very interesting audio and not many people record these things for posterity. It's good to know what someone looked like, but just as equally interesting to hear them speak. I have some relatives on my mother's side recorded at a party in 1955 and my brother made a recording of...

    Stratford Road

Dave, Ha ha! The playing field at Moseley Grammar was separated by one used by Moseley School for Girls by a fence, trees and bushes, but there was always a hole in the fence however many times they patched it up. There was also 3 or 4 yards of "no mans land" in the bushes! No land mines...

    Borderlines

True, Jim, and they were relatively late on the scene in this context. Keiron, before I moved out here, I technically lived in Poole, yet I was only 200 yards over the borough boundary, was three miles from Poole centre and barely a mile from Bournemouth town centre. Then the boundaries...

    Old street pics..

Architecturally the Market Hall was never a beauty, but it is still one of the Brum places that I miss the most. It was what it was, but nevertheless it was known by many as a symbol of Brum that should not have been demolished. Yes, sometimes it rained, Mort, but it was still a pleasure to go...

    Borderlines

Keiron, Borders get blurred as infill building takes place over a number of years and separate comunities more or less become one. Even post codes no longer help and tend to exacerbate the issue. I don't think that there is a straight answer to this question. Maurice

    'Tommy' Jones Percy Road, Sparkhill/Greet

Sarah, My father was 22 years older than my mother and he died when I was 13 in 1952. Just one sister turned up at his funeral, claiming that her sister wasn't well, though they both drank an incredible anount of whisky, so her absence could have been due to a hangover, who knows? But no...

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

It wasn't the Firebird, Jim, as I knew that place and Chris Padan, who managed it, well. He moved down to Richmond and died in 1996. Maurice

    'Tommy' Jones Percy Road, Sparkhill/Greet

Sarah, You're welcome. JONES like SMITH is not an easy name to research due to the vast numbers of them. It looks as though Thomas may have been the only member of his family to move to Birmingham. Given that Louise was born in late 1882, her death would likely to have occured in 1924 or 25if...

Elf9, The bombsite was behind the Springfield Dance Hall, now an Asian functions place. I lived at 215 Knowle next to the demolished houses and there's a picture on the Knowle Road thread. Maurice

And attached is Roger & Mary's family on 7 April 1861 living in Castle Village, Castle Caereinion, Montgomery. So your JONES family look pretty Welsh to me! Maurice

    'Tommy' Jones Percy Road, Sparkhill/Greet

There's a christening entry in the Berriew, Montgomeryshire parish records for Maurice son of Roger & Mary JONES, born on 9 June 1857, christened the same day in one of two private ceremonies. Roger's occupation was maltster, see attachment. There is a corresponding entry in the Births Index...

    'Tommy' Jones Percy Road, Sparkhill/Greet

If father Harry was born at Eaton Constantine, his birth would be registered in Atcham Reg Dist not Wellington. In that district and with a birth date of 1886-8, there is only one Harry born 1 Qtr 1887, Atcham R.D., Vol 6a Page 656 with a mother's maiden name of EVANS. EDIT: This fits in...

    'Tommy' Jones Percy Road, Sparkhill/Greet

Well Eaton Constantine, Harry's supposed birthplace, is only 6 km out of Telford WSW and sort of midway, though 2 miles south of the main road, between Telford & Shrewsbury. Baptisms are on FMP, but if they were non-conformist, would have had to go Shrewsbury or Much Wenlock. There's nothing C...

    'Tommy' Jones Percy Road, Sparkhill/Greet

MWS, Just looking back at that Telford one, Louise's birth quarter is right, though not the year, they had a son John H, born in 1 Qtr 1920 - that agrees. Very strange coincidences, though given the huge number with the name JONES, it is just possible I suppose. Unless the parents are dead, I...

    'Tommy' Jones Percy Road, Sparkhill/Greet

Sarah, Jones, like all of the common surnames, poses difficulties because there are so many of them. But his father, Harry JONES married Louie (Louisa) HUSON in 1 Qtr 1909 at Wellington ref Vol 6a Page 1015. Thomas was born in 1 Qtr 1922 at Wellington ref Vol 6a Page 1249. At the time of the...
