Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Hello Lawrence. I do remember the horrifying showers where the nurse would come in to make sure we were washing ourselves properly. She used a scrubbing brush on the tops of my feet causing them to bleed. The durbac soap caused me to suffer with dry eczema for many years. I was just turned 11...

    Lewis's Department Store

I used to spend a lot of time in Lewis's, but was not too keen on all those stairs. I was much happier using the wooden escalators. I loved the sound of them rattling away.

Thank you for sharing his photo Lawrence. I do remember Miss Buckley. Such a lovely headmistress. Strict, but loveable. I can picture her now, wearing her tweed suits sitting in her office. I spent many hours in her office having lovely chats. If she had not retired the same year as I left, I...

    Bracebridge Street

Looking carefully at the clothes the children are wearing, I think you may have a point Dave A about the sashes being gas mask cases.

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Hello Chrisange51. I imagine you used to go there when I was there. I can remember that when we had the dances, the girls would sit on the benches along the wall on one side of the assembly room, & the boys sat opposite. I never got up to dance, as I was scared at the time. They were happy...

Hello Joe. The nurse you mention was nurse barratt. I never liked her, & I do believe she shared a house with miss buckley. Thank you joe for helping me remember a few more names, like miss hill (though some of the boys used to call her fanny hill),whom I did not like, due to her strickness, &...

    fish and chip shops

Hello Mick710. I used to live next door that chippy in potters lane, just up from the bartons arms. Such a lovely couple who owned it. There were occasions they would bring fish & chips around to us when they had closed. I was so upset when all those lovely houses were demolished.

Hi Chrisange. I was at hunters hill from 1965 until I left school in 1969. I remember the girls from cropwood coming over for dance nights, & remember coming over to use the outdoor swimming pool before we was allowed to go into bromsgrove to the swimming baths. I also remember rosemary cottage.

Trevor Street & St Clement's Road, Nechells

I used to go in the shop nearly every day, & I remember her weighing the sweets, then adding extra every time.

Trevor Street & St Clement's Road, Nechells

Hello shirley. My grand parents lived in St Clements Road, & I used to go to visit them nearly every day. I do remember A sweet shop on the bend of st clements road, & was always given money by my granddad to go to buy some sweets from that shop. The lady that was serving, always gave me extra...

    Villa Street Lozells

Thank you Lyn. Unfortunately, I can not remember our door number. All I can remember from that house, was having the cafe next door, my bedroom being at the top of the house with no light & those horrible rats who came up through a hole in the toilet floor. They scared my mum quite often. Will...

Hopefully, I will be able to come to the next re-union. It will be nice to meet up with people who lived in aston, & maybe see someone I knew.

    Villa Street Lozells

Hello Lyn. How uncanny. We live near each other in bracebridge street without knowing, & now villa street. You are correct, it was the stream that ran under our garden. Been so many years since I was living down there. We did not stay there long. My parents managed to get us a move to erdington.

    Villa Street Lozells

I used to live in Villa street in the late 60's/early 70's. I lived next door to the cafe that was on the corner of villa street & nursery road. Never liked living there much, especially when the owners of the cafe would throw their empty tins over into our garden. We was over ridden with rats...

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Hello Dave. When I was sent to HHOAS, I did ask why, & was told it was for my health, though I never understood at the time.

Glad to help Dave. Getting confused is easily done. Especially after many years. I too have the same problem. At first, I hated HHOAS, & kept running away, but then the headmistress showed me lots of kindness, & began to like it, though the same could not be said of some of the other teachers.

Thank you for sharing this photo Trebor. I do recognise the photo, & have since discovered that it was in Greenhill, just down past Blackwell post office. I believe it has now closed down & was under police investigation not long ago as the head teacher was jailed for 12 years for raping...
