Thanks for posting the photo on No.2892 it shows Ray's first barber shop next to the British Lion, I am lucky enough to have the original, given to Ray by a customer.

    Old street pics..

I have two observations, there was a large red brick imposing bank on the corner of the side street (name escapes me at the moment). and Newtown Row. I think it was a Barclays Bank. In relation to the Marquis of Lorne, it was definitely on the corner of Newtown Row and another side street...

    Monkey Run

Our monkey run was Newtown Row, and High Street, Aston, we would walk up on one side of the road and back down on the opposite side, if it was wet we used to go into Blacks, the shop was shut but there was a big entrance with glass "boxes" which had clothes etc., displayed in them and plenty of...

    Birmingham weddings of the past

We had our wedding reception at Burlington Street School, self catered by my mother and friends and relatives. This was very common at the time - 1957. In contrast my son was best man at his friends wedding in Lake Garda which cost well over £40,000 about 5 years ago.

    When Everyone Wore A Hat...

My dad always wore a hat, a flat cap to go to work in and a trilby for best, the trilbies were made from velour, he always left his hat in the front room and on one never to be forgotten occasion our cat had kittens in it. This was probably some time in the 1950's and I know they were expensive...

    Medical Card Reference Numbers

Christina, I think the reference numbers you quote are related to medical cards (not NI numbers) I seem to remember seeing these on buff coloured medical cards in the past, perhaps this will jog someone's memory who can give you a full explanation.

Perry William aka The Tipton Slasher

Last night I was looking through some papers in an effort to help my great nephew with a school project and came across a postcard of a painting I presume of The Tipton Slasher - William Perry (1819 - 1880) Champion of England Bare Knuckle Boxing 1850-1857. There was also a postcard showing 4...

I thought the girls with the baskets were going home from school after cookery classes. The No.8 bus would be heading towards Hockley from that stop.

    White House Perry Beeches

When I moved to a newly built flat in Bromford in 1967 I had to pay the Council 30/- one pound fifty pence key money, which was returned when I left and handed back the keys.

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

Re the photos of the children and the cart, I don't think Alan is correct that it was taken in Parliament Street as the houses on the left are three storey and there were no 3 storey houses in Parliament Street or Park Lane. The mystery deepens.

Re Post 129 I wonder if the celebrations were for the Silver Jubilee of George V this was in 1935 and the clothes worn seem about right for that era.

Re the first post with the man pushing a pram, I know not many men did that, but I have been brought up with the story that my brother who is 12 years older than me, pushed me in the pram from Aston to Castle Bromwich to see the airplanes, this would be in 1938, he obviously didn't care about...

    Henry Whitwell

Rogue I think the attitude of DMBC is despicable, have you tried writing to your local newspaper to highlight this and get support for your very worthy cause. This is a relatively small sum and compared with the money wasted by all Councils, have you tried getting the support of the local...

Hi Berniew, in reply to your post no.1578 I'm sorry I don't know whether the Victoria Playhouse, Aston, was part of a small chain. What I do remember is that an older girl in our street asked me whether I would like to go to the Victoria Playhouse with her, in my ignorance - I was very young -...
