    Our childhood toys

You could buy “Caps” for cap guns in little rolls coiled up in a small round paper box. We used to fold them over, double or triple etc to make a louder bang. One day I struck a whole box with a big stone, the resulting band nearly deafening me.

    IN OUR GARDENS 2025

I’ve had plenty of bumblebees. I grow lots of lavender and a few other bee friendly plants, that keeps them happy

    Aston Hall

I have been to one of these events, it was quite good with lots of reenactors interacting with the visitors.

    Our childhood toys

I had one and remember all the solid rods and roof. It was a bit fiddley and, in all honesty, I would make a start and never finish it.

Dolman Street Stores photos taken by Mark Tooze

Nice photos Mark. The Canon nifty 50 f1.4 is a really good lens for stuff like this. The images quality does stand out and it has a beautiful shallow depth of field that you can use to isolate background clutter.

    Science Museum Newhall Street

There was an aeroplane cockpit like the one in your photo at the Newhall Street Museum right at the far end of the museum where you crossed over a redundant canal arm to the building that housed the Spitfire and Hurricane. I remember it because as a curious kid I was just bursting to sit in it...

    Our childhood toys

The one thing I remember about childhood toys was the advertising and artwork on the box depicted how you will have an amazing experience way over and above anything you could imagine and with a high degree of realism.

    Rivers: River Tame

Indeed, they were. I have a feeling that both of these bridges are now gone. I recall the larger one #87 getting washed away in the early 1980’s in the winter following a thaw after quite a deep snowfall. It sat alongside the A4097 by Kingbury Mill. I am not sure when the one in #86 was...

    HS2 progress 2020 and beyond

Good point Richard. Extending it to Manchester, Liverpool, York and Edinburgh in my opinion would have had a significant positive impact upon the West Coast Mainline, The Midlands Main Line and the East Coast Maine line, increasing capacity significantly.

    HS2 progress 2020 and beyond

I would say that the biggest problem HS2 has is how poorly the idea was marketed. The promise of shaving 20 minutes off a train journey to London was never going to excite many. That alone caused confusion over what HS2 is actually for. We have an outdated railway system that has seen...

    Lucas Great King Street memories

I would say that the decline of the UK car manufacturing base in the 1980s significantly impacted Lucas Industries. The loss of the domestic markets would have lead to a decline in parts demand form Lucas. I also think that like the motorcycle industry, poor quality and reliability issues had a...
