    Birmingham (Industrial) Cooperative Society Shops

We often went to the shop on Stockland Green. Any mention of Co-op brings memories of smells - sawdust in the butchers, bacon, cheese and coffee (ground) in the grocers, wet fish and vegetables in the greengrocers and lotions and potions in the chemists. Smells and the angle of sunshine take me...

    Old English/Latin/Dog Latin

Back again, I agree with Stokkie and for clarity I have numbered all lines. Second line of the heading has a word at the beginning Em.ght which I thought at first was Eight but that doesn't make sense to me. 1. Complainings .......... ....... yr good lordship ye/yr poor orator Thomas Croft...

Royal Sutton Coldfield Great War Project 2013 - 2025

Hi Brumbirder, We were involved in a project to put forenames to all the men on our church memorial (St Michael's Boldmere). These were incorporated into a folder for the whole of Sutton assembled by a lady called, if I remember correctly, Yvonne. There was a folder for St Michael's at the...

    Erdington Cottage Homes

There are quite a few records for the home at the Wolfson Centre at The Library of Birmingham I found them going through Discovery at the National Archives. They may just be general rather than personal but it might be worth a look. I'm going to see what they have for the Princess Alice Home at...

    The Railways in Wartime

I just missed it Alan but felt the affects for many years. I belong to the Chester Road Station Friends and we are hoping to mark Remembrance Day this year by showing what it was like to live through those years and how hard it was for the railway workers. I've learned a lot so far due to this...

Sorry for straying Alan! Is the bomb for me?

    Old English/Latin/Dog Latin

The document mentions several names one being John. He appears at least 3 times but his surname looks different each time. Presuming that Honourable is correct his name begins with 'H' but on reflection it's a very strange name in that case.

I do think it's a plea and the heading reads: To the Right Honourable Sir Thomas Audeley ........ Lord Chancellor of England I also forgot to say that once you are sure of a word you can find the same letters elsewhere in the document. (I was just writing this when your message came up Pedro.)

    The Railways in Wartime

If I remember correctly it was oil lamps, stoves etc. There's a thread for the company on the forum https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/threads/rippingille-aston-road.30802/

    Old English/Latin/Dog Latin

Yes - probably Sudeley. Definitely English - looks like an appeal to 'his lordship' to sort out a complaint. They seem to have the motto 'why use one word when a dozen will do' in those days. There are a couple of names at least but I haven't spotted what it refers to. I'm away for a week from...

    Old English/Latin/Dog Latin

It looks English to me. To me the first line on the right hand reads 'To the right honorable Sir Thomas Audley.... of England Don't know if it helps but what I do is type the document out putting in the words I can read and leaving spaces for those I can't. Then I go back and try to make sense...

    Queens Hotel Stephenson Street

Thanks Viv, an awful sadness comes over me when I think what's replaced this building. I'm looking at buildings of stations etc on the cross-city line from New Street to Sutton and want to make sure I'd got the right pictures. The theme for Birmingham Heritage week this year is Architecture so...

    Queens Hotel Stephenson Street

Just spotted the tower on the second photo in post 20. Was this on the Exchange Building or is it part of the hotel? It appears to have a viewing platform but I'm not sure I'd venture on to it.

    Hunton Hill

Thanks Mike, I was born in a nursing home which was at the top of Hunton Hill, near to Gravelly Hill. The building has been demolished but I was wondering what it was originally?

    The Railways in Wartime

Thank you to everyone who replied above. I've only just got in from a talk on the Britsh Army in the 18th century (which was amazing) so I'll be re-reading your excellent posts again (and again) in the morning. Thank you very much, Penny

    The Railways in Wartime

I wondered if anyone has any information on the precautions taken on the railways during wartime. I know that tarpaulins were often draped over the cab so that the fire couldn't be spotted but so far that's about all. Any help/links would be greatly appreciated.

    Information about Welwyndale Road Sutton

Thanks Lyn, that gives a wider picture of what happened on the night. Devastating to say the least.
