My mom was one of 13 children only 7 survived to adulthood,as a little girl she was pallbearer to her brother Ronnie, she also did it for other children and was paid 3p.for each one. There used to be a board which hung outside the pawnshop in Summer Lane, for the purpose. The photo.is Ronnie just...

    Chamberlain family

Having alway's been a fan of the chambelain family,it's nice to see them remembered with these great photo's. Neville Chamberlain is often only remembered for his "peace in our time" speech, and percieved as being a bit gullible, not so.He was buying time,in one year he organised...

    registry office for marrige,

We were married there, and had our photo's taken by the fountain.I thought it was Paradise St. What I am sure about is the pub on the other side of the road from the registrars office:rolleyes:,it was a tiny pub called The Cross Keys. Don't remember a registrars office in Aston, before my...

What happened to all the rubble?

A very good description of the whole process Stitch...could almost smell the old plaster and mortar..:)

What happened to all the rubble?

I had forgotten about the cellars, and everyone had one in Aston, they would have taken a lot of rubble. Each cellar could have taken the the rubble that the house above left behind. That would have made it level again.

What happened to all the rubble?

Thanks for the info.Stitch.So the rubble was cleared from site and transported to a yard where it was crushed, and then taken to where it was required, and not the nearest place. Everytime I travel down the Aston Expressway,I think my old house and school U.T.S.are unerneath me,but that wouldn't...

ROYAL NAVY RECORDS: Is it worth......

Margaret, The navy records office is excellent, within a couple of weeks of my first contact with them,I had my father-in-laws full navy service history 1927-1949,and it was free. From the information they sent with a list of every ship and shore base he served in,I was able...

    Munitions factory

Chris, The 2 photo's I'm thinking of were groups of women, one taken in c1880 the other during the 1914-18 war. The difference between the 2 photo's was profound,in the early one the women all looked downtrodden and filled with apathy,in the second they looked confident, and sure of...

Hello Julie, I have seen 2 photo's of women munitions worker, from the time you speak,I would like to see them again myself but am not sure where I saw them:rolleyes:,it is most likely in a Carl Chin book or reproduced newspaper. In my family tree is a Kate Anderson who married...

    Mangle or Wringer

My mom's washday started with a very early start.Light the fire in the house when that was going, take a shovel full of fire down the yard to the brewhouse, and light the fire under the boiler. Then she would go to her job as a cleaner at the school,by the time she returned the boiler would have...

    Price, WW1 photo - Help?!

Could be the cap badge of the Royal Army Medical Corp. That would also fit in with his reluctance to kill,I believe they were treated badly,so medals may not have been issued.

Why are you a family historian?

For me Viv,it was an accident. My wife's cousin sent my wife information on family matters (my wife had no interest). However, the way she sent this info.was to our son's computer, and he didn't want it cluttering up his business computer,so he put it all on an old laptop, and gave it to me.With...

    Crimes : Birmingham murders

It was Edgbaston,a bloke I worked with at the time lived near by,and the police interviewed him and took his shoes away,so they must have had a footprint as well. When they found this young woman, there were other body parts on the mantlepiece, too grusome to recount here. Oh,Patrick Byrne was...

    1930s Hygiene

Most of the products that Stitcher has mentioned are familiar to me,however,I don't remember using any of them:(.It seems personel hygene, didn't have a very high priority when I was a lad,(normal dirty little boy I expect:rolleyes:),always cleaned my teeth though, using soot and salt. The tin...
