Hi Shortie, Hope you don't mind but I had a quick look for Emma, I think she may have died in 1893, age 43, buried Key Hill, reg number 38331. Her Daughter Clara, possibly married Thomas James Stevens, living in Northfield in 1901.. I can give you more details on that if you want them.

    The Clock - Bickenhill

Thanks for the census brummie nick :) Bernie, I didnt get chance to go to the library today, I will try in the week. I guess it is highly possible that there was one by the church at one time because I believe many churches had inns close by. I have looked at older maps but nothing has shown up...

Hi Paul, no ..the memories arent painful at all, I am glad I have them.. I just wish I could remember more of what Pops told us. He often spoke of cycling miles and miles back to camp and getting into trouble for being late!! I think the Apes were to do with Gibraltar too. I don't recall him...

    The Clock - Bickenhill

Bernie, why didnt I think of that !!!:unconscious: Here are three, one from 1886-1888 (earliest I have found so far) one from 1937 and the other is from 1954. There is a difference in that it seems the building has moved back from its original position which has allowed for the front car...

Paul, your mention of "Rock Ape" just brought a tear to my eye and I felt I had to add a little note to this thread, which I am sorry to say I know very little about. My late and much missed "Pops" who passed away just over a year ago, often used to talk about his days in the RAF and he often...

    The Clock - Bickenhill

Just found this which shows it as being on the Coventry Road (where it is now ) in 1882. I also found a news article from 2008, re; the airport expansion. It says the manager said it was a shame the 80 year old building might be knocked down...so that makes it 1928 !! Lots of conflicting...

    The Clock - Bickenhill

it confused me too Sue, because I always thought it was older than that and when I used to go there we used to use the downstairs room and I'm thinking that somewhere in the dusty corners of my memory, it was said that originally the room was servants quarters (but I cannot guarantee that is...

    The Clock - Bickenhill

I had a look for info and came up with this from a Fact File... "Bickenhill has 3 inns in 1839. The only surviving pub is The Clock Inn, a modern mock Tudor roadside pub built in 1961. Originally it was near the church but moved to take advantage of the turnpike road traffic" I also found that...

    Pub names

Hi Sue, the pub has had several names, The Chelmsley, The Cornerstone, The Rooster (can't remember if it was the Red Rooster or just Rooster) then when my partner and I reopened it after it was closed down for a long time, it was called King George V. We werent there long but it is still King...

    Warstone Lane

Hi Brian, After a quick look..there was a Frederick and Eliza at 151 Hockley Hill in 1901 with sons Edward, Arthur, Harry, Howard and Harold and daughter Beatrice. Fred was a Confectioner. Later they were to be found at 65 Villa Street, Aston Manor and Fred was a Beerhouse Keeper. Not sure about...

Hi brummie nick, I have just found one thread started by Astoness in 2009 that mentions Doug Copley https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=25167&page=5&highlight=copley ...I have asked if she maybe still has the photo to do with claypipes as this may also be of interest to...

Hi David, I agree with pollypops, it is indeed a beautiful car and obviously it is given plenty of TLC .. I'm glad you found out how to post it.. :encouragement: I got the family info from Ancestry.co.uk by following them through the census. I have had a quick look at the Newspaper Archives...

Hi David, I'm pleased that my post has made your day. :encouragement: I believe the photographs are held at Birmingham Central Library, from what I can see in the Acknowledgements in the book, but please check there opening times if you plan to visit because they vary due to an impending move to...

Hi David, You are right about the pub having burnt down, it has now been replaced by an Aldi store. I was horrified when I saw the remains, such a waste of a lovely building that I had known of for most of my life. But it was doomed to demolition anyway and had stood empty for such a long time...

    Warstone Lane

Re: warston lane, Hi Mike, I think it is right, all the records I've found seem to fit and the date on the headstone I think is 1874 which fits with a burial record on FMP for Allen Preston, buried 1875, Reg no.18284, Warstone, 3 in grave and on Free BMD's site, died Birmingham Dec 1874, age...
