THE WINTERS OF 47 AND 63

I’ve just watched this. Fascinating. I was twelve at the time, and in my first year at secondary school. I well remember the slippery walk downhill to school, and the complete inadequacy of winter clothing in those times. otherwise, my memory is a bit hazy really. I don’t think that we had a tv...

    Cradley Heath Railway Station

Crikey this takes me back. In 1981, I moved to Cradley, and rather than drive to work In Birmingham city centre, I decided to travel in by train. A 15 minute walk got me to Cradley Heath station, and I probably did the journey into Brum for around four years or thereabouts. The old station...

    Harry lucas school

That sounds about right. I can remember the term ‘Grammar school stream’ being used, but being an eleven plus failure - I can’t say that it made me feel any better. I can remember an interview with someone from the Youth Employment Service (this was probably at age 15), and I like many others...

    Harry lucas school

Crikey Peg, your memory for all things HLS is astonishing. I can only recall snippets from my five years worth spent there. I’ve just come across a couple of prize books. One was for form G2, and the other was 2 Alpha. I‘ve forgotten the form naming/numbering scheme. Can you remember?

Fish & Meat paste from the 50s and 60s

Ah yes - ‘Brands’, a Sunday teatime staple. I always preferred crab paste, but it was sometimes suspiciously gritty in texture.

    Birmingham Christmas of the past

Not so very far from my grandparents then. No. 122.

    Corporation Street

Fascinating. The aircraft fuselage is that of a De Havilland Mosquito. These were largely constructed of wood, and the airframe manufacture was carried out in various locations, often by furniture makers.

    Birmingham Christmas of the past

In an attempt to try and recapture the magic of Christmas’s past, I tried to find those glass baubles online. In fact they are still made in Poland, but are very expensive.

    TOWER BALLROOM TO BE DEMOLISHED

I seem to remember that it was used as a film location for the TV series ‘Boon’. One of Harry Crawford’s dodgy enterprises!

    'take Me High' Film Locations

I see that ’Talking Pictures TV’ are showing ’Take me High’ on Friday morning. Might be worth setting your PVR, (or perhaps not).

Nice shot. I can track my journey from home to school.

    Harry lucas school

Fascinating. I don’t remember the tower either, and I had supposed that the new block to the front of the school was added later, when the school became Harry Lucas. There’s also some sort of building that divides the school yard, which I think must have gone by the time I started. My own...

    Alpha Tower

Alpha Tower is a funny sort of shape. In plan, it’s rather like a boomerang. Like many modern high rise buildings, it has a strong central core for all the lifts and service risers. The floors are largely supported from the core. I can’t say that I really noticed the sway - good job really!

    Alpha Tower

Ahh yes, Alpha Tower. I worked on the 27th floor for a time in the late eighties. We had a good view of the ICC construction I remember. Fire drills weren’t much fun - it took ages to walk down the fire escapes, and as I’m nervous of heights and lifts, it took me a while to become acclimatised...

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Crikey. Having been given a clue, and also having lived in Lozells for around 17 years; I looked long and hard at this photo, but still couldn’t get my bearings. A look at my trusty 1967 edition A-Z, followed by street view confirms it of course. I have no recollection of those maisonettes on...

    Covid vaccination process

I have my second shot this afternoon. I’m feeling a little apprehensive about it, because I felt quite ropey after the first one, but I guess that there’s no reason why I should have the same reaction again. what with that, and a haircut tomorrow, by golly these are exciting times.
