Marks & Spencers in the 1930s

I wonder if the gas lamps were left in place because the electric ones were still unreliable at this time?

Marks & Spencers in the 1930s

Great picture Mike. It seems very strange to see a shop with lights hanging so low down from the ceiling. I wonder if the doors/windows were in front of the counters as there seems to be a lot of light on the floor just there.

MILLARD, THomas, Born c1843 presumably Warwickshire

Here is the report from the Birmingham Daily Post 9th June 1859. I only managed to find it because shera gave the name of the person he stole from (Thomas Lowe) and the date it first appeared in the Birmingham Gazette - a search for Thomas Millard got no results.

WORT John , Born 1840, Brmingham

Tony, I think the search on the newspapers is a bit unpredictable - in the past I have found an article and then when I have tried to find it again I have entered exactly the same word/words in the search box and it doesn't show up. If he died that would certainly explain why you can't find him...

WORT John , Born 1840, Brmingham

Hi Tony, this is from the Birmingham Daily Post 3rd March 1858. It also states that he has been in trouble 5 times before and that he has been in a Reformatory School. You are also correct that the army didn't care about criminal records - it seems an officer turned up to try and 'claim' him...

WORT John , Born 1840, Brmingham

Tony, do you have the newspaper article from march 3, 1858? it mentions that three days after he had stolen from his master he had enlisted as a soldier although he couldn't go as he was committed to trial. Could he possibly have become a soldier after serving his sentence?

Hi Tony - I don't know if you have seen this or if it helps but it is the report from the Birmingham Daily Post 9th January 1861 of Patrick Condry age 16, a gilt toy maker stealing a cape on the 27th November 1860 and being sentenced to 2 years imprisonment with hard labour.

    TB Sanatorium 1940's

There was a TB Sanatorium at Romsley which is not far from Rubery. The photo doesn't look like the hospital itself but perhaps it could have been taken in the grounds/nearby. There is a Romsley and Hunnington history website https://www.rhhs.org.uk/local-history/12-sanatorium.html

Hi Mike - did I explain it right - is the court behind house number 31 on the street? I have looked again for the thread on courts but I can't find it :upset:

    Oak Place, William Street, Ladywood

There is an excellent thread on this forum explaining about courts but I can't seem to find it at the moment so I will do my best to explain - courts were a courtyard/group of houses built behind the houses that faced a street. There could be a few courts along one street. To access a court...
