    The 1980’s House

I was watching something on another site the other day and it got me thinking of my first house. I bought it in 1979 and with not much money slowly furnished it over the years to come. Looking back at some of the 1980’s styles choices I now think “did I really buy one of those and actually like...

    National Library of Scotland maps

It’s quite an interesting statistic, all those motor traffic related deaths. I too lost a great-grandfather who was hit by a bus on Washwood Heath Road. Strangely I was also aware of this number and how it compares today, less than 10 fatality’s a year. Improvements in car braking system, better...

    Blind Match Seller

I remember him. He would stand by one of the arcades holding his white stick up and boxes or books of matches between his fingers. He would invite you to just take a box and drop the money in a box below. Someone once told me that he knew the sound of the right amount of money dropped and would...

There were three Jones’s if I remember correctly. Trevor Jones taught English to first years. Very smart looking older guy whose copperplate handwriting was a work of art. Harrington Jones who, I was never sure what he taught. He seemed to organise all the school plays and was quite a good...

Mr Hitchcock, nickname Scrachit was the form teacher of a friend of mine called Trevor. His mom wanted to pop into school and see his form teacher. Trevor had told her his name was Mr Scrachit, so when she asked the school secretary if she could see Mr Scrachit, she nearly fell through the floor...

The food was indeed exceptionally good. The head cook was Mrs Stevens, a lovely lady. She was quite firm but would never see a kid go without a meal. She seemed to work miracles with the food, always a choice of two main meals using fresh ingredients.

I also went to the new Erdington Boys School as a brand new school. I will say it was not a great experience. There were a couple of decent teaches, but in the main the others seemed out of control under a headmaster who just did not seem interested in providing quality schooling. Most of the...

I also went to Slade Road Senior School for four months and then was decanted to the new Erdington Boys Schools. Here is a photo of Mr (Killer) Cordeon the Technical Drawing teacher. He actually was a decent chap and very knowledgeable.

    Rupert Street Nechells

Good observation that. Street photography was quite rare then in working class areas. Imagine lumping round an enormous, large format camera with glass plates. It was quite a spectacle so people would often come outside and pose for the camera. Its why a lot of these vintage photos have a lot...

    Birmingham buses

You could be right. That’s style of social housing was common in Kingstanding, so it could be the junction of Finchley Road and Hornsey Road.
