There is no death registered for a William or Billy Richards in Bham 1939. I can see reports of an accident involving a William Richards of 1 Highmere Road, Snow Hill, Bath - a car and a lorry - in Bath. There were fatalities but William was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Thomas was their youngest son, Arthur James Draper was a son in law. In 1891 Richard & Agatha were also living at 14 Leonard Road, with one daughter (Eliza) at no. 16 and another (Ann) at no. 8.

I think there are at least 4 likely possibilities. He died (as a civilian) before Jane's second marriage. He died in WWI. He abandoned Jane. They divorced. Can't see a likely death listed for a John or William Dawson in England or Wales. There are many John, William, J and W Dawsons listed on...

The probate records just state who it was granted to, this is not the person who inherits though it could be. If there was no Will then she would have died intestate, in which case there may be a number of people who could inherit. As it looks like that Joyce wasn't officially adopted by Eliza...

Probate is not the same as a Will. Probate is usually granted to an executor, who carries out the instructions of the deceased. So the 3 girls may have been beneficiaries. I think you can purchase a copy of a Will (if there is one).

On the 1957 ER James appears to be back at Witton Lodge Road. Joyce isn't there but there is a Kathleen M, who I think James' marries in 1956 so probably divorced.
