    St John Ambulance Brigade

Do you have any memories of the SJAB who were based at Lionel Street in Birmingham. As a cadet I remember marching through the city on our Annual Church Service complete with marching bands. That was very moving. My father was a County Staff Officer until 1965 when he retired. He was totally...

    Walkers Toffee

Oh yes Palm Toffee, but who made it? It was Walters of course. (London) There were so many old names that have gone. It was not a Birmingham Company so perhaps it should not be on this Forum. Still nice to ponder brands gone,Old Betty Plant and Clarnico sweets.!!!!!! Regards Ian.

Thanks for clearing the subject of "Jerry builders" up. You really are very informative forum members. I am still fairly sure the houses were POW built though.Interestlingly one forum thread mentioned the Italians who were given a lot lore freedom to move around. After the war many hundreds...

Hi Nick,Yes the houses were built just pre war,my father bought one new in late 1938. It was not these that were involved in POW building but on the opposite side of the playing fields. REgards Ian.

    Sheldon Bombing

I seem to think that Silvermere/Mapledene and Berryfield Road had very few houses and that Parkdale Road was the first to have houses off Cranes Park Road. The bombing of the school may well have been the same string of bombs that hit Parkdale as the plane would have come from the airport that...

Is there any information of the bombs that fell on Parkdale Road. This was a new road having been built in 1938/9. Apparently a German Bomber was being chased off Elmdon Airpaort and it dropped it's bomb load to gain speed as it flew off. The bombs dropped in Parkdale Road damaging several houses...

    Wrensons shops

Hi Maggs. Yes they did. As most did not have cars it was a long walk from the bus stop. It also saved them from actually going to the shop. This was partly an extension of my early days at Wrensons tiding the delivery bikes with the large basket on the front. This was a very serious business but...

    Wrensons shops

Hi Don, I had glossed over that part in my ramblings, but yes that was a regular occurance. The muslin was supposed to keep the flies out but it did not and IF a fly got in to lay its blow then it could not easily get out so laid even more. As the bacon was delivered on unrefridgerated vehicles...

    Bull Ring Print

Just a further thought on the Bull Ring. After the trams went and we had the Crossley/Guy/Daimler buses,we would wait for the service 58, and later on the 60 on the downward slope bus stop. As the road was still cobbled it was a little scary when the bus came and the surface was wet how the bus...

How about Kensitas coupons also. They started off with silk flags of the world before switching to coupons. My mother had loads of gifts from them. Regards Ian.

    Wrensons shops

One of your forum mentioned his neighbour was a manager at Wrensons but he did not get any freebies. That reminded me of my days at Wrensons. I had panniers on the back of my bike (ex army back packs) and a carrier over the rear wheel. I would load up the panniers with items that would travel...

    Bull Ring Print

I have a print of the Bull Ring with St Martins in the background and a tram trundling down the left. I have it hanging over the fireplace in my home now. I love that print. All those Midland Red buses parked in front of the church. It was a great atmosphere, as someone else said the old lady...

    Typhoo Tea Bordesley Street Digbeth

How well I remember going to the factory to collect cartons of tea, loose tea of course, which were packed into 1/4lb (that is 4 ounce) packets, then into a carton of 100 packets which totalled 25lb in weight. We often had to wait while these were packed for us. Typhoo was a fast selling tea then...
