I think that Leicestershire and Northamptonshire were probably the biggest boot and shoe areas in the Midlands.
A branch of my father's (Aston) ancestors were originally from the Northampton area and they were bootmakers.
My Nan used to have a beer at home delivery, it was a wooden crate which held 12 bottles - she lived in south Worcestershire but I guess it would have been from Davenports.
She enjoyed a beer in the evening before she went to bed!
Not Birmingham specifically but I thought this was interesting, it's from a Dictionary of Typography by John Southward dated 1875 - some of the terms used in the trade are quite funny!

There was a cellar bar in Temple Street - the end near St Phillips churchyard but I can't remember what it was called - this would be in the 90's. The entrance door was at the side of an alleyway between the sides of buildings.
However I don't remember if it had a nautical theme - probably not...
I don't know about Birmingham now but 'breathing space' is not left between new flats in London now, in fact some of the space between older blocks is filled in with new blocks.
Am I right in remembering that it was an actual requirement for a certain distance to be left between the 1960's...
