Rob.
The post you refer to was a very old one. The midlandpubs site has been reorganized since then and does not now seem to have a section on Stratford road

Kieron, Can't seem to find a link to Stratford rd

Here's an advert for the Angel Hotel from the 1890's

My dad ran this pub in 1967,it was next door to the laundry at the time and I went Ladypool Rd junior school next door. Its customers were mainly Irish and travlers , it still had the dumb waiter working.
The Buffalo's had a meeting room on the 1st floor. And a club room down stairs at the rear called the padded cell. IN 1969 when M &B had some floors replaced my dad found gold sovereigns and half soverins under the floors.

My brother worked at Velocette during the 50's and I believe that they held their Christmas dance at the Angel, could that be possible?

“Built in the eighteenth century, the Angel Inn on the Stratford Road was then a coach-ride out of town and boasted a fine tea garden. This engraving shows an old stage coach which had passed through the toll-bar on the Stratford Road; also visible is the side-bar at the entrance to Ladypool Lane. (From R. K. Dent's, "The Making of Birmingham”, 1894.)

I am trying to trace more information about my grandfather. His name was John Joseph Higgins. I believe he lived around the corner from The Angel at 14 Ladypool Road between 1954 and his death in 1969. He was from Strokestown, County Roscommon in Ireland and was listed as a millwright on his death certificate, so no doubt worked in BSA or some of the other engineering works. I don't know if he was a drinker, but if he was, he would have undoubtedly frequented the Angel. I have not yet found a picture that shows houses directly behind the Angel, which is where he must have lived, before they were demolished and made way to the extension of the pub, hotel and subsequent restaurant developments. Any information, pictures, maps, etc, all deeply appreciated. Best wishes. Tony

I hope you still access this account. I would love to learn more about the Angel in the 60s to help me learn about my grandfather.

Living just around the corner from the Angel it was the local for some of my family, myself I never rated it or the Vic that Morturn has mentioned at the bottom of Long Street. I only ever used it once in the early 60's on a very hot summers day when working across the road we popped in there for a liquid lunch.
I'm trying to find out anything I can about my grandfather who lived around the corner on Ladypool Road in the 50s/60s.
