Ist premises that looks empty to the left of the Odeon , every Thursday night in the 60's after getting paid and playing a game of snooker ,we'd call in there at that time it was a Wimpey store a coffee and a burger . No Macdonalds in those days yippee

Suffolk Street Queensway in 1974, the old and the new of the Alexandra Theatre, with Spike Milligan next week. HIFI shop and wine bar and a few half cars, Ford Escort & van and a Hillman Imp. You can also see an old style telephone in an upstairs window

Late 70's I think it was I along with the wife saw Peter Wyngarde as Dracula here , he took 7 curtain calls that night

I spy the entrance to The Hole in the Wall pub. Spent many an hour in there. Quite often lunch times with an oppo that worked in a camera shop in Martineau Square. Happy days.

NoddKD
NoddKD Ditto , me and a mate went in there one night late 60's , got in with two girls , they looked at us and thought these look gormless we'll latch onto them . Gormless being the operative word we could't get rid of them even followed us up to the flat where I lived , never again

Not sure I posted this view - Preedy's with adverts for Ronson lighters on the sides, nice entrance to Victoria Buildings, Estate agent wording in the windows and the signs of all those starlings - remember the noise in the winter evenings.

I do Steve and do you remember the fantastic shapes in the sky they created as they flew around before bedding down .

Finally iconic hotel on the Hagley Road The Strathallen Hotel from 1972. Loooking like they had bunch of bricks for a garden refurbishment left over this round building is different. Varied line up of cars out front, those Dolomites on the right? and the "Morse " type Jaguar.

View attachment 154932This hotel opened in the early 79's , the company I worked for had trade shows at any new hotel that opened , there was another two in town one was by Alpha Tower and the other was by the Gaumont I think those were both opened in the 70's also

Blast from the past Newtown Shopping Centre in 1969, This is the sign on the lower wall , more of interest is all that is there and is not now. On the right hand side is a shop front, and either side of the Barton Arms are buildings, with a nice selection of cars parked on the side, also note the pram ideal for making a go- cart from the wheels

Lyn , I also thought it was my neck of the woods but that sign for Newtown Shopping centre has snookered me . We moved here in 1976 and we left here in1996 and neither of the household of 3 here remember a sign in 21 yrs so Steve's pic must predate us . Oh by the way when coming from town it's the Griffin first

steve the the bull is where we hold a lot of our forum meet ups and when we are allowed back in there you are most welcome to join us it would be good to meet you in person...the last landlady was rose who had been there for about 23 years she came from the village mail finch road...retired a couple of years ago and i think went back to her native ireland

lyn
Lyn Ron Dowty used to keep The Village Maid before he took the Shareholder Arms over when I lived around there in the 80's

Thank's janice that's where I took possession of a mis-spent youth in the 60's all you had to do was to walk through that individual door to the right of the steps to the arcade . That was were Rex Williams had his snooker hall and that's where we boys lost our innocence great day's indeed

Another aerial view, as before, no idea of year or location - there are a few interesting shaped building for you to work on and a mix of old and new too, good luck.

Edit : Dave Riley suggested Holloway Head itself near the junction of Marshall St.

Yes definitely Holloway Head , CN Cheshire's of Nottingham did'nt they have a depot on this road if you really scan you can also see the Greyhound cider house . Top left you can also see the end of the Peace Garden

I have just popped back to this part of the forum to post a link I have found and noticed all the posts by Dionysius - apologies for overlooking these, I will come back to them and add details and reply and acknowledge where necessary.

I came across this link when looking at the Lichfield canal restoration web site and they had a link to these old photos of canals, it wss part of a blog so wide and rambling, but I have come back to it recently and found this Birmingham page/s. I thing there must be others in the blog but they need hunting and I don't want to lose the page I was originally on which is around Merry Hill area.

Anyway lots of photos old and new and plans where the appropriate part of the canal has ben shaded - hope this is something new and of interest, if not it shows how well I look at the forum !!

This the Apollo Hagley Road in 1971, National petrol station very busy with a camper van and a nice sports car - Sprite? sure you will tell me !! and on the very right hand side a Unigate milk float - do you remember Humphrey? I will judge from your replies if that needs an explanation.

"Watch out watch out there's a Humphrey about" , funny thing about that saying there was a woman at work at the time with that surname and a couple of lads at work used to chant that whenever she was present . Could'nt help but laugh .

Here is Broad Street and Granville Street, with Lee Longlands - possibly the only recognisable building - and such a wide variety of vehicles and a variety of parking locations. A 360 these days produces hardly anything of character. I am sure someone will throw light on what the building in the centre was please

Home ground to me this, the central building offered many lads of my age hour's of fun throwing stones at the windows. The only trouble was this one day a policeman came around the corner , he called the three of us together and read the riot act out to us ending it with if i see you here again there will be trouble. Lo and behold fifteen minutes later he was back with all tjree of us in mid throw, that was it we were all escorted to our individual homes and told off in front of our parents . I will say it had the desired affect no more throwing . I never did know who or what were in the build but once it came down the new Telephine House went up an office block . I think spmr of the staff from Newhall Street moved in

Telephone House was built in 1936 in Newhall Street which was a main telecomms hub and still is today. I think this building was replaced by an office block which eventually became the HQ of the West Mids regional telephone area.
