Thanks Brian.

The Chinn article mentions that Carl Chinn hopes that links are established between Birmingham and both Sturge Town and the Parish of St Ann in Jamaica. Especially since the Olympic Jamaican team will be based here next year.

One of the first Birmingham statues I took pics of a couple of years ago.

One of the photos in Chinn's article shows the old Lloyds Bank and Clocktower

The statue of Joseph Sturge has been moved many times to make way for traffic schemes. It once stood in a small park and, during WWII was encased in brick to protect it from wartime damage. The photograph of the bricked-up statue was taken in October 1940 by a refugee, Mr Schmutnig, who was apparently prohibited from taking pictures and so required the company of a Mr Ashmore. It was given as a gift to the Misses Amy, Millicent and Evelyn Sturge, Birmingham residents.

They are residential apartments with the grand name of "Calthorpe Mansions" .... they're still there.
For a short while in the 1980s I lived in the adjacent Cropthorne Court, that fronts onto Calthorpe Road. I suspect it was built at the same time as Calthorpe Mansions. It had a wonderful antique lift with the old-style hand-operated metal gates.

I understand that the Joseph Sturge statue is currently being conserved:

Delighted to hear that Joseph is to be cleaned. The last effort was in 2007 when the Civic Society, the Council and the Family worked together "to give Joseph a hand" - his left hand was missing. We had a grand day when the statue was rededicated, with mayoral, Montserrat Association and family speeches plus a steel band! This was followed by the unveiling of the blue plaque at his homesite and lunch at the Council House. A souvenir of the day was the Civic Society's production of a model of the statue (this copy is now in Sturge Town, Jamaica.)
