OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

We now move onto Roll 57, these last two rolls have been quite small as there were lots of pictures of a vehicle run ( lorries busses and old cars) which seems to have gone down Aston Road North, all August 1991.
The rest of the roll is covered by the following description " The redeveloping of the new road ways in Nechells Park Road and Nechells Place and Saltley Road" as I don't know the area and the pictures are from 1991 I will add a few comments and post the pictures.
The HP sauce factory pins the location, and a large car park and lots of building spoil and pipes

We now hop over to Digbeth and this time it is as if nothing has changed, we are looking down Floodgate Street to Digbeth with Little Ann Street on the right, working from the left Ashton Engineering - still there, viaduct - same, pub- yes, factory with the steel windows - yes and even under the bridge the large building on the right is still there - and it looks fine - the only change is the Swan is now know as the Ruin .

Another change is that Digbeth is covered in graffiti these days......

We now move to the other side of the bridge and see how big the building site is - there are barriers and piles of rubble everywhere, if you see whyere the bridge height sign is you can work out where the original road line was.

Back to roll 128, hard to keep track of these as there are pictures with no description, ( faded horse etc), I assume I am back in the right direction now. This is the Community Centre Monument Road Ladywood, 1965. It does say 3/4 but not sure if it is 3rd April or 3/4 shot?!

Although I lived local to this building , I didn't know what it was . As kids we went swimming the baths being next door on the left hand side . Nice decorative brickwork Steve .

23rd March 1967 is when this photo was taken and my information says it is the old West End Suffolk Street, I can see that is called the West End Ballroom, I assume is was always a dance location? Just one figure walking up the street I imagine it was a lot busier Saturday nights!

Steve the double door nearest to us with the semicircular canopy is the entrance to the dance floor . Moving up to where the man is was the entrance to the cinema . I saw Spartacus in the early 60's there

For some reason unknown to me we all went from school to the cinema there in the 60’s to see South Pacific . The cinema was full of school kids.
Tinpot I suggested going to The Gaumont to see Lawrence of Arabia in 196,1 I'd seen it seven times by doing duties with St John Ambulance Brigade, anyway the history teacher was in agreement and the day was arranged. I was over the moon with the decision pity, a lot of the class didn't share my enthusiasm though, strange that I thought

A move to the right and we this a location, gas holders, old warehouse, rail line and bridge - interesting road layout as both lane are heading away from us road sign points to Adderley Park and Duddeston but there is no road heading towards us (?)

Recent view from Saltley Road (Nechells Parkway), the old brewery on Cato Street North looks in a sorry state and they'll soon have an excuse to demolish and replaced with an industrial unit. Gas holders on Nechells Place long gone.

We now move onto Roll 58, unfortunately not all picture were taken on a sunny day, this roll is one of those occasions.

First up Church Tavern, Lichfield Road and Waterworks Street this was taken in November 1991, looking rather sad with the windows boarded up, upstairs see the stone window surrounds with the dome and spire and the large slope of the roof.. Standing on its own with open spaces next to it.

Moving along Lichfield Road to the junction with Priory Road, and we have King Edward VIII, I am at a loss to the actual location , my list is a bit vague and it has all changed around here. Nice shape to this building built on an angle with three arched windows downstairs and and three above , upstairs we have a window wrapped around the corner with a small dome above it with fancy attic windows built in to the roof line.

My list says old buildings Lichfield Road, a close look at the photo sees the road sign say "koo" so I am assuming Cuckoo Road. A dark picture needed much lighting hence the top of the white building disappearing , it is nicely propositioned, central shop door, two windows either side and three windows above - next to it is a fine two storey building again nice shape two windows up and down with the shap of the door been mirroed in the window above it, Assuming I am in the correct please we now find a large traffic junction.

We now move to the roundabout at the top of Cape Hill, looking like a vehicle enthusiasts dream it is chaos cars, vans and buses everywhere, unfortunately not much to add about the ;location -on the right hand side is the Ship... you can just make out a nice square street lamp in front of it.
EDIT- Thanks devonjim - of course it should be Camp Hill ( I have left it so when we see your comment later we dont wonder what you are on about )
Second Edit - just gone back to my list and it says Cape Hill on that so I feel a bit better !!

We now move to Cattell Road and Coventry Road , just across the road from the Blues ground, nice square globes on the sides and double aspect too. See how the building is set back to the right hand side with a flat area on the left side, note the large trough in front - I would say a horse trough but as there have not been any around for ages I just say trough!!
