A number over the years, but by far the loveliest was a good while ago now in Newcastle Upon Tyne - sometime in the eighties I would guess.
I was up there for a business meeting, stopping overnight and returning the following day. The hotel was central and very close to a theatre - in my memory just a little further along on the opposite side of the same street, though Google Maps/Earth shows me an area today that is nothing at all like the images that my memory of then brings back.
When arriving I had noticed that the theatre boards said Peter O'Toole was appearing in George Bernard Shaw's 'Man And Superman', which I decided on the spot would be an unexpected treat for my evening!
I recall that it was well attended, with a number of singles remaining here and there when I checked so I was still able to find a good seat as a walk-in. And yes it was very enjoyable, good chuckles, plus a couple of minor mishaps with props that were played-off by P. O'T with a glance and an "ooops!" expression to the audience which caused a laugh too. A lovely evening, made more-so by having been entirely serendipitous!
The following morning I was waiting for the lift on the way down for breakfast, and when the doors opened Peter O'Toole was standing inside and said 'Breakfast too?' with a smile as I stepped in and said 'Of course!' and we both chuckled ... and he quite charmingly started telling me how he enjoyed a boiled egg with breakfast, that it was good for you as well as tasty, and said I really should think about it ...
We walked through from there to the dining room together and I said briefly that I had been at the evening's performance and enjoyed it greatly, and he seemed genuinely embarrassed by the compliment. An utterly charming manner and a very beautiful man.
We wished each other a good day and he went toward a further table and I turned in a different direction, and I noticed he had sat down with his back to the room
