Courtney Road Great Barr

I was five years old when we moved to Courtney Rd in 1938 or 1939. It was just built and cost £300 and £10 deposit. By the time war broke out we had moved to Abingdon Rd and I moved school to Hastings Rd. When I moved to the juniors in Hawthorn Rd in 1942 I was in the same class as Peter Walker who even then knew more than most of us.

This is me with my mother at 89 Courtney Rd in 1938. When most people only had box brownies strolling photographers used to go round the estates to take photos. If you paid more they would come at night and take flash photos of the children posed with their toys. In 1939 we moved to Abingdon Rd and had an identical one taken with my younger brother with me. Until he died in 2018 he used to post on the forum as AKATARAWA. I will send the second pic separately.
